Korea’s dogs are starting to age gracefully : Oldest population of pets ever has many new products, services

Lee Won-ju’s maltese Happy was diagnosed with a uterine sinus infection five years ago. The hospital told Lee that her dog would not last two weeks if they didn’t perform the surgery. Happy was 11 years old, which is equivalent to about 65 in human years. Despite the fact that there was a risk that Happy would not survive the anesthesia because of her old age, and the high cost of the surgery - 1.2 million won ($1,075.75)- Lee and her family decided to go through with it without hesitation. “Happy is part of our family, who was always there when we were happy or sad. We wanted to try any treatment possible,” said Lee. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and Happy was able to return to good health. She’s now 16 years old, 85 in human years, living a good “senior” life.
Korea’s pets have never lived so long. This was made possible thanks to developments in veterinary treatments and a shift in the mindsets of pet owners. Health check-ups for dogs and cats have become the norm, and veterinarians can now find diseases or tumors that they couldn’t in the past.
There is also a growing number of “petfams,” also known as people who regard pets as family, who are willing to pay large sums for treatment for their pets. Kim Tae-ho, a veterinarian at the Irion pet clinic, said, “Although in the past, there were many people who gave up when they heard that [treatment] cost a lot, people these days have a mindset of ‘I decided to raise this pet, so I will raise them in good health to the end.’”
There are various products made to fit the needs of dogs such as eye-protecting “Doggles,” soft latex toys, nutritional supplements for weak joints, dog carrier sling bags and pet stairs. [PETTOGO, COUPANG]
With more old pets, demand for products and services for them has grown. Pet owners not only spend money and get care for their pets when they are sick, but they also take special care of them on a daily basis, giving them better food and making sure they exercise. They want to extend their pets’ lives and create an environment for them to live healthy and happy lives.
Kim Bo-ra, owner of a 9-year-old long-haired Chihuahua named Nerong, recently invested in a stroller for her dog. Nerong has heart disease that is getting worse, making it hard for her to go for walks. “The saddest part about Nerong aging is that she can no longer eat her favorite food or exercise,” said Kim. “I wanted to make her as happy as I can before she died, and I’m glad that I can now take her out for strolls around the neighborhood thanks to the stroller.”
Pet items that provide walking assistance made headlines when a scene from the MBC reality show “I Live Alone” went viral. It showed entertainer Jun Hyun-moo taking his dog to get a wheelchair. Aside from wheelchairs, there are also special casts for disabled dogs.
Online commerce platform Coupang opened a special category last year dedicated to items for old dogs. They included nutritional supplements that are good for joints and cartilage, food that helps older dogs improve their joint health and eyesight and even pet stairs that help prevent dogs from injuring themselves when jumping down from beds or sofas.
There are also sunglasses that protect dogs’ eyes. The most famous is by the American brand Doggles. These are goggles with shatter-proof lenses and UV protection to help keep the dog’s eyes safe. They also are supposed to help prevent cataracts.
Handmade suncaps for pets designed by local brand Asobijin are also gaining popularity among pet-lovers. The caps are made with ear holes and a ribbon on each end used to make a bow under the chin like a bonnet to keep the cap in place. Senior dogs are subject to iris atrophy, or degeneration of the iris, and this helps to keep the sun out of the dog’s sensitive eyes.
Another thing to consider in old dogs is their weak teeth. Some dogs can no longer chew on hard bones or toys. For those dogs there are special soft bones. There is even a toy that claims to prevent dogs from getting Alzheimer’s. It is made with a natural latex material that helps protect their teeth, and it makes noises when moved around, which stimulates the senses of dogs and helps boost brain activity.

Pet-sitting businesses have begun to provide differentiated services for senior dogs. Old pets require extra special care and attention from professionals - more than just being fed and played with.
Pet-sitting service Petner has veterinary students who offer special nursing services for old dogs. Although these students do not practice clinical procedures, they are able to offer special care with their professional knowledge.
“Seventy percent of the pets that come are old and most have disabilities in either their physical [health] or their cognitive ability,” says Choi Ga-lim, a former veterinarian and CEO of Petner. “With every request, I carefully check their medical records to see if they are taking any medications or have had surgery in the past.”
Dogmate is another pet-sitting facility that offers special services for different age groups of dogs. For the senior dogs, Dogmate has services such as bowel care, posture correction and special dietary programs.
However, the businesses that are most affected by the increase in older dogs are veterinaries. Most big veterinarian clinics have their own rehabilitation rooms, and they are beginning to build orthopedics centers, which many old dogs need. According to Irion pet clinic’s veterinarian Kim, “Dogs over the age of seven are medically considered to be old dogs, and are suggested to get medical check-ups at least once a year.”
There is also a cancer center for pets. N animal medical center is a place that specializes in cancer in pets. They not only remove tumors, but also offer cancer treatment and radiation therapy. There are eight veterinarians from different fields of internal medicine, surgery and more.

함께, 오래, 건강하게 … 반려동물 ‘무병장수’ 시대
평일엔 유치원, 여름엔 수영장, 비행기를 타고 해외 여행도 간다. 사망 후엔 수의를 입고 납골당에 안치된다. 사람이 하는 건 반려동물도 다 하는 세상이다. ‘100세 시대’는 사람에게만 해당되는 건 아니다. 평균 수명을 훌쩍 넘어 20년 이상 건강하게 장수하는 개와 고양이가 늘고 있다. 다만, 국내 반려동물 개체 수가 2000년대 초반 급증했음을 감안하면 지금은 대다수가 초고령기에 돌입하는 시점이다. 노령 동물을 타깃으로 한 상품과 서비스가 쏟아져나오는 이유다. 반려동물 ‘무병장수’를 꿈꾸는 시대, 어떤 일들이 벌어지고 있는지 알아봤다.
반려동물도 ‘100세 시대’
이원주(31)씨의 반려견 해피(말티즈)는 5년 전 병원에서 자궁축농증 진단을 받았다. 자궁을 들어내지 않으면 2주도 버티기 어렵다고 했다. 당시 해피의 나이는 11세. 사람 나이로 치면 약 65세다. 노령견이어서 마취에서 깨어나지 못할 가능성이 높았고 비용도 120만원이나 들었지만 이씨 가족은 망설이지 않고 수술을 진행했다. “해피는 기쁠 때 슬플 때 항상 옆에 있어 준 가족이에요. 사람처럼 아플 때 할 수 있는 치료를 다 해보고 싶었어요.” 다행히 수술은 무사히 끝났고 해피는 건강을 회복했다. 올해로 16세, 사람 나이로 약 85세가 된 해피는 여전히 가족들 곁에 남아 실버라이프를 보내고 있다.
반려동물 장수의 배경엔 수의료 서비스의 발달과 보호자의 인식 변화가 있다. 반려견•반려묘 건강검진이 보편화됐고, 과거엔 잡아내지 못하는 질병이나 종양을 발견할 수 있게 됐다. 질병이 발견되고 치료법이 있다면 비용이 얼마가 들든 기꺼이 지불하겠다는 ‘펫팸족(반려동물을 가족으로 여기는 사람들)’도 늘었다. 김 원장은 “과거엔 비용이 많이 든다고 하면 포기하는 분들이 많았는데 요즘은 ‘한 번 키우기 시작했으면 끝까지 건강하게 키우겠다’는 인식이 자리잡은 것 같다”고 말했다.
건강은 일상부터 챙겨야…노령동물 특화 상품 인기
반려동물 수명이 늘어남에 따라 관련 상품과 서비스에 대한 수요도 빠르게 증가했다. 건강에 큰 문제가 생겼을 때뿐만 아니라 평소 먹이고 입히고 운동 시키는 모든 면에서 비용과 노력을 아끼지 않는다. 단순히 수명만 연장하는 게 아니라 최대한 건강하고 행복하게 오래 살 수 있는 환경을 조성하기 위해서다.
9세 장모 치와와 네롱이를 키우는 김보라(33)씨는 얼마전 반려견 유모차를 주문했다. 네롱이의 심장병이 심해져 야외 산책이 어려워졌기 때문이다. 김씨는 “네롱이가 나이가 들면서 어렸을 때 즐기던 음식이나 운동을 포기해야 한다는 점이 가장 안타깝다”며 “남은 시간을 최대한 행복하게 해주고 싶었는데, 유모차 덕분에 가벼운 동네 산책이 가능해져 만족하고 있다”고 말했다. 반려 동물 보행 보조 기구는 최근 방송인 전현무씨가 반려견 또또의 휠체어를 맞추는 모습이 전파를 타면서 화제가 됐다. 바퀴 달린 휠체어 외에 다리에 직접 착용해 보행을 돕는 깁스 형태의 보조 기구도 있다.
소셜커머스 쿠팡은 지난해 노령견 맞춤용품 기획전을 열었다. 연령별 맞춤 사료, 영양제 등 노령동물 특화 상품을 찾는 고객이 증가함에 따른 것이다. 기획전에는 노령견의 관절과 연골 건강에 도움을 주는 영양제, 관절과 안구 기능 개선을 위한 시니어용 사료, 높은 곳을 오르내릴 때 관절에 가해지는 충격을 완화해주는 강아지 계단 등이 포함됐다.
반려견의 시력을 보호해주는 선글라스도 있다. 미국 브랜드 ‘도글스’의 제품이 가장 유명하다. 머리 뒤로 끈을 둘러서 착용하는 고글 형태로 일명 ‘도글라스’라고 불린다. 개(dog)와 선글라스의 합성어이지만 고양이도 착용할 수 있다. 반려동물의 눈을 자외선과 이물질로부터 보호해 백내장 예방에 도움을 준다.
국내 브랜드 ‘아소비진’이 핸드메이드로 제작하는 반려동물 선캡도 인기다. 모자에 구멍을 뚫어 귀를 밖으로 빼고 보닛처럼 턱 밑에 리본을 묶어 고정하는 형식이다. 한낮의 따가운 햇살에 반려동물의 눈이 직접 노출되지 않도록 돕는다. 노령동물은 홍채가 위축돼 있어 눈부심에 취약하기 때문이다.
이빨이 약해진 노령견이 딱딱한 물건을 깨물면 다칠 위험이 있다. 이를 예방하기 위해 말랑말랑한 소재로 만든 노령견 전용 개껌이 따로 나온다. 치매 예방 기능 장난감도 있다. 천연 라텍스 등 부드러운 소재로 만들어져 이빨을 보호하고, 움직일 때마다 ‘삑삑’ 소리가 나도록 해 감각을 자극하고 두뇌활동을 촉진하는 식이다.
시니어 맞춤 서비스 생겨…‘웰다잉’까지 준비
보호자가 여행 등으로 집을 비우는 동안 반려동물을 돌봐주는 돌봄서비스 업체들도 노령동물을 위한 차별화 전략을 내놓는다. 노령동물 케어는 단순히 밥을 챙겨주고 놀아주는 데서 그치지 않기 때문에 보다 세심하고 전문적인 손길이 필요하다.
돌봄서비스 업체 ‘펫트너’는 수의대생 돌보미를 내세워 노령견 전용 간병서비스를 운영한다. 돌보미가 직접 의료 행위를 하지는 않지만 전문 지식을 바탕으로 세심한 케어가 가능하다는 것이 펫트너측의 설명이다. 수의사 출신인 최가림 대표는 “서비스를 찾는 70%가 노령 동물인데 대부분 신체나 인지능력에 이상이 있다”며 “의뢰를 받을 때 복용 중인 약과 수술 경험 등 의료 정보를 꼼꼼하게 확인한다”고 설명했다.
또 다른 업체인 ‘도그메이트’도 반려동물의 연령대에 따라 서비스의 종류를 달리한다. 시니어 돌봄 서비스에는 거동이 어려운 동물의 배변 처리, 욕창을 방지하기 위한 자세 바꾸기, 전용 식단 급여, 특정 시간과 간격에 맞춘 투약과 주사 등이 있다. 돌봄 일지를 작성해 사진•영상과 함께 보호자에 전달하는 것까지가 서비스에 포함된다.
반려동물 노령화에 가장 민감하게 반응하는 분야는 물론 동물병원이다. 대부분의 대형 병원들은 별도의 재활치료실을 마련하는 등 노령동물 환자가 몰리는 정형외과를 강화하고 정기검진 프로그램을 마련했다. 이리온 동물병원 김태호 원장은 “의학적으로 7세 이상부터는 노령견으로 보기 때문에 1년에 한 번씩 정기검진을 추천한다”고 말했다.
반려동물을 위한 암센터도 있다. 서울 노원구에 위치한 24시 동물병원 N동물의료센터는 반려동물 노령화에 따라 증가하는 종양 질환에 대응하기 위해 2016년 부설기관 한국동물암센터(KACC)를 열었다. 종양 제거 수술과 항암치료뿐 아니라 방사선 치료까지 제공하는 종양치료 특화 기관이다. 내과•외과•영상진단 등을 전문으로 하는 수의사 8명이 진료한다.
