A career shift: From Infinite to beyond : After first lead role in a drama, Kim Myung-soo is ready to take on more

In the drama, which tells the stories of a courthouse, he plays a judge named Im Ba-reun, an elite who doesn’t really care much about making money or changing the world - he chose a career in law so that he wouldn’t have to suck up to others. Im has his own values and sticks to them when it comes to making important life decisions.
“We filmed the show for five months, and before the filming started, I went to a real court and watched the judges working,” said Kim, in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.
“I got to rethink about a lot of things that I have forgot as I got too [comfortable] in life, as many things that happen in [the show] really touch upon things that happen in real life, as the drama is based on the experiences of a judge and the stories he has heard.”
The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. How was playing a lead character for the first time?
A. I felt quite burdened by the role. But, when I read the script, I was sure that I could do well. When I went over the script with the director and then started filming, I just became Im Ba-reun [naturally]. The director let me do whatever I needed to become the character.
How would you score your acting in this drama?
Because the drama was recorded before it premiered, I watched the drama as it aired. I focused more on the cons than the pros and I wish I [had done better] when it comes to expressing emotions. I would give myself 50 [out of 100] because I did see so many things [I could have done better]. I read many of the comments online and some opinions that state things I need to fix really help me out a lot. These are the things that encourage me to go forward.
How similar are you to the character you played?
The director and the writer said that I am similar to Im based on the way I think and talk. So I tried to make myself become the character as best as possible.
What are the things you tried to do to break any prejudice that people have against you being a singer that acts?
It’s been nine years since I debuted as a singer. There are things that change naturally while I monitor my works and think about what’s best. I try to set up a tone when it comes to acting.
Do you have any plans to release an album?
I’m currently working on a solo album. The release date has not been decided. I have done several ballads up until now, but I want to tell the world that I can do many different genres. I got some songs and I am recording songs of different genres right now. I don’t know which genre [will get picked] to make this album.
Is there any other character or genre of dramas you want to do?
Before, I had some ideas about which characters I wanted to do and what kinds of projects I wanted to take on, but now I don’t have that anymore. I have done period dramas and I have done a legal one, too. Now it doesn’t matter what I do. I need confirmation that I can make the work I’m given into something great. If I don’t have self-confidence, it won’t turn out to be a good work.
What are the things that occupy your mind these days?
Healing. I have not really taken a decent break as I do many things. I don’t think I have really given myself [a proper break] even though I have taken time to rest my body. To have a long career, I think I need to rest up without thinking anything at all, which is something difficult for a person with lots of thoughts like me. But I think if I do find a way to take a long break, I will grow further.

김명수 ”성동일·류덕환 선배님에 한 수 배웠다”
배우 김명수(26)에게 JTBC 월화극 '미스 함무라비'는 첫 주연작 도전이자 인피니트 엘이 아닌 배우로서의 입지를 확실하게 다지는 발판이 됐다. 안정적인 연기력으로 작품의 성공을 견인했다. 작품을 마친 그의 얼굴에선 미소가 가득했다. 자신의 연기에 대해서 100% 만족하는 것은 아니었지만, 작품을 사랑해준 많은 사람에게 감사함을 전하고자 한 것. "사이다 매력이 통쾌한 카타르시스를 선사했다. 행복했던 작품이었다"고 종영 소감을 밝혔다.
-시청률 5%를 돌파하며 선전했다.
"민사재판에 관한 드라마가 없었다. 현직판사인 문유석 작가님이 직접 경험한, 들은 내용으로 구성되다 보니 공감이 많이 됐던 것 같다. 사실적인 요소들이 많았다. 그리고 사회생활을 하면서 현실에 순응하며 잊고 살았던 것들을 드라마 속 박차오름이란 캐릭터를 통해 다시 깨우치게 된 것 같다."
-판사 역할 어떻게 준비했나.
"동부지법에 가서 많이 참고했다. 5개월 촬영했는데 촬영 시작 전 1, 2개월 동안 판사님이 직접 민사재판하는 모습을 보거나 형사재판을 가서 봤다. 우배석 역이었다. 우배석, 좌배석이 일하는 공간에 가서 살펴보기도 했다. 세트는 실제 법원의 공간들을 그대로 따왔다. 최대한 흡사하게 꾸며놨다. 그래서 그런지 연기에 몰입이 잘됐다. 싱크로율이 높았다."
-첫 주연작에 대한 부담감은 없었나.
"첫 주연이라 부담이 컸다. 그런데 대본을 읽었을 때 내가 잘할 수 있겠다는 확신이 들었다. 감독님과 대본리딩을 한 후 촬영 들어갔을 때 '임바른화'가 됐다. 감독님이 내가 하게끔 내버려 뒀다. 감사했다."
-자신의 연기에 점수를 준다면.
"사전제작이었기 때문에 촬영을 끝내고 방송을 봤을 땐 시청자 입장이 됐다. 아무래도 장점보다는 단점을 많이 보게 되는데 딕션이나 감정표현에 있어 서툰 점이 좀 아쉬웠다. 50점을 주고 싶다. 단점들을 너무 많이 봤기 때문에 그 점수를 주고 싶다. 댓글을 쭉 보는 편이다. 이런 부분을 개선했으면 좋겠다는 의견이 담긴 댓글을 내게 큰 도움이 된다. 날 이끌어나가는 원동력이 되고 있다."
-임바른과 실제 김명수 얼마나 비슷한가.
"감독님, 작가님이 말하는 거나 생각하는 게 원칙주의자적인 임바른과 비슷한 것 같다고 하더라. 그래서 작품 자체에 김명수 자체를 많이 녹이려고 노력했다고 했다. 많은 것들이 녹아 있었고 내가 하는 게 임바른이라고 생각하고 연기했다. 차이점이 있다면 나서야 할 때나 얘기해야 할 때 확실하게 말하는 스타일인데 임바른은 거리를 두고 그런 상황이 벌어졌을 때 마음의 소리로 답하는 스타일이다."
-가수 출신에 대한 선입견을 넘어서기 위해 노력한 점이 있다면.
"연기톤을 위해 노력한다. 발성으로 달라진 점도 있지만, 플랭크를 하면서 대사를 해 몸에 배게 한다. 그리고 올해로 데뷔 9년 차다. 세상에 대해 알아가면서, 모니터링하면서 무엇이 베스트인가 생각하며 스스로 바뀌는 게 있다. 시간의 힘에서 자연스럽게 익어가는 과정도 중요한 것 같다."
-앨범 활동 계획이 있나.
"솔로앨범을 준비 중이다. 구체적으로 언제인지는 정해지지 않았다. 그간 발라드 스타일을 많이 불렀는데 다양한 장르의 노래를 많이 할 수 있다는 걸 알리고 싶다. 수록곡을 받아서 장르별로 녹음 중이다. 어떤 장르의 앨범이 될지 모르겠다."
-향후 하고 싶은 캐릭터나 장르가 있나.
"예전엔 이 캐릭터에 이 작품을 하고 싶다는 게 있었는데 이젠 그런 게 없다. 사극도 찍고 법정물도 찍었다. 이젠 어느 것이든 상관없다. 작품을 잘 만들어갈 수 있을 것이란 확신이 있어야 하는데 아무리 좋은 작품이라도 자신이 없으면 좋은 작품이 아니다. 좋아하는 작품, 내가 잘할 수 있는 캐릭터라면 장르에 대한 제한은 없는 것 같다."
-요즘 가장 많이 생각하는 것은.
"'힐링'이다. 뭔가 열심히 달리다 보니 제대로 쉬어본 적이 없다. 몸은 쉬지만 정신적으로 쉰 적이 없다. 기름칠해야 오래 굴러갈 수 있지 않나. 아무 생각 없이 쉬어야 할 것 같다. 생각 많은 사람이 아무 생각 없이 쉬는 게 힘들다. 이 과정을 겪으면 한 단계 더 성장할 것 같다"면서 "요즘 사진을 통해 '소확행(작지만 확실한 행복)'을 하고 있다. 국내 여행을 하면서 힐링도 하고 사진도 찍고 싶다. 조용한 곳부터 돌아다닐 것 같다."
