iKON completes its trilogy project : ‘New Kids:Continue’ is third EP for the popular boy band in 15 months

Known for the major hit “Love Scenario,” which was released in January, iKON is back with a new EP entitled “New Kids:Continue.” It is the last in a three-part series that began in May 2017 with “New Kids:Begin.” The second was the album “Return,” which was a major success with its main track “Love Scenario.” The members of iKON recently shared their thoughts on having a huge fan base, their new music and their expectations in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.

The popularity of “Love Scenario” was especially big among grade-schoolers. “A lot of kids began to sing along to the songs a little after we released the album,” said B.I, the leader of the group. “I realized this later on when I saw children singing the song while hiking. When I saw this, I was thankful. That’s when I felt that a lot of people also like the music [as much as we do].”

According to B.I, “Becoming the ‘president’ among grade-schoolers was my goal two years ago. Although the lyrics are sad, I made the song with [the heart of] a little child. I think in that way, I was able to connect with them.”

DK said he was very excited about the release of “New Kids:Continue.” “I’m glad we get to return with new music again this year,” he said. “I will work even harder to return the love we received for ‘Love Scenario.’”

Ju-ne mentioned that he went on a diet and lost weight to present his fans with an even better look. “I didn’t eat rice, worked out and ate almonds and a cup of whiskey at night,” he said. “Because I can’t quit drinking, I lost weight with [a bit of] whiskey.”

iKON also discussed the burden they felt after the success of their hit “Love Scenario” - mainly, how to top it. “It would be a lie for us to say we didn’t feel any burden after receiving so much love,” said Jay. “We thought a lot about it, but our chief Yang Hyun-suk took away some of the burden.”

According to Jay, Yang, the founder and CEO of YG Entertainment, told them, “Whether [the music] does well or not is not your fault. All you have to do is show people how hardworking you are.” The boys said that after releasing “Love Scenario,” they had a meal together with Yang for the first time.

“We can only release music when its quality is good,” B.I said. “With good music, the chief will be propelled to turn it into an album. He was very supportive.”

As with many of iKON’s previous albums, B.I wrote and composed all the tracks on “New Kids : Continue.” The main track, “Killing Me,” is a sad song about the unexpected heartbreak a man feels after a breakup.

“The main track is usually chosen by our chief, but when I wrote ‘Killing Me,’ I had a feeling it would be picked,” said B.I.

The theme of their new EP is “dark sexy,” and the members chose Jay as the member that fit the concept best. “‘Dark sexy’ was actually something we first heard through articles [published about us], and wasn’t something we were thinking about at the beginning,” said Jay. “But when we saw the whole performance, we realized there are parts of the choreography that are dark and sexy.”

“When we were coming up with names for the dance, there were even talks of calling it Jay’s Dance because it fit him so well,” said Song.

“I think because we have fun making music together,” said Bobby, “we always place our focus of the project on the process.”

iKON will embark on its “iKON 2018 Continue Tour,” with the first concert held at the Gymnastics Arena in Olympic Park, southern Seoul on Aug. 18. They will then travel to Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, Manila, Jakarta and Hong Kong.

아이콘이 '사랑을 했다'가 어린 친구들에 인기를 끈 것에 감사함을 표했다.

아이콘은 2일 오후 6시 새 미니앨범 ‘NEW KIDS:COUNTINUE’를 발표한다. 지난해 5월 ‘NEW KIDS:BEGIN’, 지난 1월 ‘RETURN’에 이은 시리즈의 3부작 완결판으로 열정과 노력을 지속하겠다는 아이콘의 각오를 담아냈다.

리더 비아이는 "아이들이 많이 부르게 된 시기가 앨범 활동 이후였다. 나는 뒤늦게 알았는데 아이들이 등산을 하면서 부르는 걸 봤다. 그 모습을 보면서 감사했다. 그제서야 많은 분들이 듣기에도 좋게 들리는구나 느꼈다. 그 친구들한테 고마웠던 것 같다"고 소감을 전했다.

또 "2년 전 초통령이 되는 게 목표였다"고 농담하며 "가사는 슬프지만 만드는 과정에서 어린아이처럼 만들었다. 동심이 통하지 않았나 생각해본다"고 덧붙였다.

이번 컴백 소감으론 "1년에 두 번 컴백하는게 정말 쉬운 일은 아니라 생각한다. 많은 스태프 분들과 사장님 모두 밤낮없이 두 발로 뛰어다니며 만든 앨범이다. 많은 관심과 사랑 부탁드린다"고 밝혔다.

동혁 또한 "올해 한 번 더 컴백할 수 있게 되어 좋다. '사랑을 했다'가 생각보다 많은 사랑을 받아 그에 보답하는 마음으로 더 열심히 하겠다"고 했고 구준회는 "이번에 멋있는 모습 보여드리려고 살을 빼고 나왔다"고 비주얼 변신을 알렸다. “밥을 먹지 않고 운동을 하고 저녁엔 아몬드에 위스키를 한 잔 했다. 술을 포기못하기 때문에 위스키로 살을 뺐다"고 전했다.

발매에 앞서 만난 인터뷰에서 아이콘은 지난 1월 메가히트곡 '사랑을 했다'에 이은 컴백에 부담을 느꼈다고 털어놨다. 진환은 "많은 사랑 받으면서 부담이 없다면 거짓말 같다. 많은 생각을 했는데 양현석 회장님께서 부담을 조금 덜어주셨다"고 말했다.

멤버들에 따르면 양현석은 "잘 되고 안 되는 건 너네 탓이 아니다. 열심히 하는 모습 모여주면 된다"고 응원했다. '사랑을 했다' 히트 이후 다같이 처음 식사 자리도 가졌고 단체 톡방도 생겼다고.

이에 아이콘은 "부담을 내려놓고 할 수 있었다. 기대나 결과에 대한 생각을 안 하려고 한다. 큰 부담을 가지지 않으려고 한다"며 "데뷔 4년차가 되면서 회장님도 편하게 대해주시는 것 같다"고 전했다.

YG에서의 이례적인 1년에 2컴백에 대해선 "곡의 퀄리티가 좋아야 나올 수 있다. 좋은 노래여야만 사장님이 거기에 추진력을 받아 그 노래로 앨범을 내주신다. 이번 앨범 전에 응원을 많이 해주고 따뜻한 말씀을 많이 해주셨던 것 같아 힘을 냈다"고 비아이가 말했다.

한편 아이콘 타이틀곡 ‘죽겠다(Killing Me)’는 멤버 비아이가 작사 작곡했다. 빠르고 강렬하지만 슬픈 곡으로 아무렇지 않게 남겨버린 이별이 그토록 아픔을 줄지 몰랐던 남자의 이야기를 담은 노래다.

비아이는 "타이틀곡은 사장님이 선정하시는 편인데 '죽겠다'를 썼을 때 이건 뭔가 타이틀이 될 것 같다는 예상을 했다. 아니나 다를까 타이틀이 됐다"면서 "이번 앨범 전반적으로 쉽게 나온 곡들이다. 작업할 때 큰 난관은 없었던 것 같다"고 전했다.

아이콘이 꼽은 콘셉트 '다크 섹시'에 가장 잘어울리는 멤버는 진환이다. 진환은 "'다크섹시'라는 단어를 기사로 접해서 처음에는 그런 단어를 생각하지 않고 했다"고 웃으며 "전체적인 결과물을 보니까 어둡고 섹시한 게 강조가 되는 안무도 있더라"고 전했다. 송윤형은 "춤 이름을 정하는데 너무 섹시하고 잘 어울려서 '진환이 춤'으로 하자는 말도 나왔다"고 덧붙였다.

이루고 싶은 성적에 대해선 "없는 것 같다. '사랑을 했다' 때에도 그랬는데 작업하는 과정에 의미를 두고 싶다. 뭔가의 목표가 있다면 한결 같다는 걸 보여주고 싶다"고 말했다. 바비는 "우리는 같이 음악하는 것이 재미있어서 모든 작업물을 항상 과정에 포커스를 맞추는 것 같다. 음악을 즐겁게 하고 싶고 재미있게 하고 싶다"고 바랐다.

아이콘은 컴백과 더불어 18일 서울 올림픽공원 체조경기장에서 ‘iKON 2018 CONTINUE TOUR’의 첫 공연을 개최한다. 타이베이, 쿠알라룸푸르, 방콕, 싱가포르, 마닐라, 자카르타, 홍콩 등 8개 도시를 찾아간다.
