MUSIC



JOE HISAISHI ANIMATION MUSIC FESTIVAL FOR YOUTH

Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall

Aug. 26
: A festival featuring everyone’s favorite songs from the soundtrack of the “Avengers” superhero film series will be taking place for the first time this August.

Directed by composer Joe Hisaishi, this festival will be divided into two parts. A total of 14 pieces will be performed by the Arts Symphony Orchestra with conductor Chung Byoung-whie at the helm.

Guitarist Kim Hyun-kyu, who won the 2007 Young Festival, and pianist Lee Hyun-jin, who won the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition, will be performing as well.

The festival starts at 5 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 35,000 to 55,000 won. ($31 to $49)

SUMI JO ‘ONE NIGHT IN PARIS’

Sept. 5 and 9
: Sumi Jo is set to take the stage with musicians such as Jean-Christophe Born, accordion player Alexander Sheykin and the Ditto Orchestra, under the baton of Lorenzo Passerini, for her return to the stage.

In the first part of the concert, Jo will sing arias from shows written by Giacomo Puccini that take place in Paris, the city of love: “La Boheme,” a four-act opera which depicts the lives of poor young artists living for their dreams in Paris, and “La Rondine,” a three-act opera which shows how individuals seek true love in Paris.

The second part of the program consists of music from musicals such as “Notre-Dame de Paris,” “Les Miserables” and movies, including the 1951 film “Sous Le Ciel De Paris.”

The concert starts at 8 p.m. at Seoul Arts Center and at 7 p.m. at Olympic Park.

Ticket prices range from 50,000 to 180,000 won for the concert at the Seoul Arts Center, and range from 40,000 to 100,000 won for the concert at Olympic Park.

DISNEY IN CONCERT

: The only Disney concert in Korea that can be enjoyed outdoors will feature favorite songs from hit movies like “The Little Mermaid,” “Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Frozen.”

The show will be performed by the KBS Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Yun Hyun-Jin.

The concert starts at 6 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 40,000 to 80,000 won.

KIM SUN-WOOK PIANO RECITAL

: Renowned pianist Kim Sun-wook, the winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, will be returning to the Seoul Arts Center for the first time in two years. This is his final recital on his nationwide tour which began last August. The program consists of four pieces, Mozart’s “Piano Sonata No. 9 in D Major,” Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor,” Debussy’s “Suite Bergamasque,” and Brahms’ “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel.”

The performance starts at 5 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 30,000 to 100,000 won.

MAKSIM & HIS BAND

: The famed Croatian pianist Maksim Mrvica is returning to Korea for the first time in two years. Since 2004, the prominent pianist has performed in Korea multiple times. The highlight of this show will be the songs from his ninth album, which was released on June 1.

The concert starts at 5 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 77,000 to 132,000 won.

PLACIDO DOMINGO CONCERT IN SEOUL

: World-renowned tenor Placido Domingo has performed at numerous well-known opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the New York Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, London’s Royal Opera House, La Scala in Milan and the Opera Bastille in Paris. This fall, he is making his way to Korea for the first time in two years. For his seventh performance in Korea the singer has a diverse program planned, filled with arias from famous operas and show stoppers from musicals.

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 55,000 to 550,000 won.

: Set in 1960s America, this musical tells the heartwarming story of lovers at a paradise resort. Marge, whose fiance never showed up to their wedding, goes to the resort, where was she was supposed to honeymoon, with her best friend Lois. Feeling sorry for her friend, Lois tries to connect the singer Del with Marge. Meanwhile, Gabe, an employee at the resort, falls for Lois and writes a song for her. Realizing that Gabe’s talent is being overshadowed by Del’s presence, she promises to stand by him if he sings on stage.

The musical starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays; and 3 p.m. on Sundays. There are no performances on Mondays.

FRANKENSTEIN

: The musical “Frankenstein” is returning after three years away from local stages.

Based on Mary Shelley’s 1823 novel of the same name, the musical adds new characters and creative plot twists to the classic monster tale.

The musical is set in 19th century Europe and centers on the efforts of Swiss scientist Victor Frankenstein and Dr. Henry Dupre to create a fearless, immortal soldier.

However, the experiment goes awry, and a dangerous monster is born.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. There are no performances on Mondays.

THE MAN WHO LAUGHS

: Led by American theater director Robert Johanson, this musical is based on Victor Hugo’s 1869 novel of the same name and the 1928 film adaptation.

Set in 17th century Britain, the show tells the story of Gwynplaine, an abandoned young boy with a disfigured face and his search for the truth behind his birth.

Singers Park Hyo-shin and Exo’s Suho star as Gwynplaine in this production.

The musical starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays; 8 p.m. on Thursdays; 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and national holidays; and 3 p.m. on Sundays.

: Based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 best-selling novel, this musical tells the story of a gifted young girl named Matilda who possesses telekinetic powers.

While dealing with her insensitive parents, Matilda befriends her school teacher, Miss Honey, and defends her friends from her evil principal Miss Trunchbull.

Four actors - Hwang Ye-yeong, An So-myeong, Lee Ji-na and Seol Ga-eun - will play the role of Matilda.

The musical starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

There are no shows on Mondays.

KOOZA

: This show features extravagant lighting, entertaining clowns, brilliant costumes and exciting acrobatic performances. Organized by Cirque du Soleil, the largest theatrical production company in the world, Kooza features a total of 50 artists.

So far, this show has been seen by eight million people in 61 cities around the world since 2007. The show starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 3:30 pm. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays; and 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Ticket prices range from 70,000 to 260,000 won.

FUERZA BRUTA WAYRA

: The ultimate entertainment experience with energetic performances, exciting music and dazzling light effects.

Visitors are recommended to wear casual and comfortable clothes as they will either stand or sit on the floor for the duration of the show.

This dynamic theater experience, directed by famed Argentinian artistic director Diqui James, features performers flying freely in three dimensional spaces.

SEOUL FOREST JAZZ FESTIVAL

: The Seoul Forest Jazz Festival is a jazz festival that takes place in a famous park located in the heart of Seoul.

In the beginning of autumn, visitors can admire the natural scenery while enjoying live jazz performances by talented artists from Korea and abroad.

The lineup for Saturday consists of famed singer-songwriter Sunwoo Jung-A, trumpet player Peter Evans, and the Lee Sunjae Trio. The lineup for Sunday includes the Junggigo Quintet, the jazz trumpet Joep Van Rhijn Trio and pop singer Park Ji-yoon.

The festival starts at 2 p.m. on both days.

Ticket prices range from 55,000 to 88,000 won.

GRAND MINT FESTIVAL

Olympic Park

Oct. 20-21
: Unlike mainstream rock music festivals, the Grand Mint Festival (GMF) showcases musicians, such as indie artists and small instrumentalist groups, that aren’t usually heard on the radio.

Created by the Korean entertainment company Mint Paper, GMF is back for its 12th year.

This festival includes a food zone, entertainment zone, beauty zone and a “slow life” zone for those who need to take a break from the music. The lineup consists of veteran singer BoA, singer Yoonha, indie duo MeloMance, and vocal duo Bolbbalgan4.

This is the first time that BoA will appear at a Korean music festival.

The festival starts at 10:30 a.m. on both days.

Ticket prices range from 99,000 to 158,000 won.
