Picturesque bridges have become must-visit attractions in many parts of Korea. From suspension bridges to overpasses equipped with transparent walkways, it’s not uncommon to see groups of travelers crisscrossing waterways and taking in spectacular views.

But despite growing interest in unique bridges, most of these structures don’t have much to offer other than being a place for a unique photo.

Two bridges, however, offer much more than just a great background for a picture to upload on Instagram. One is connected to Jeo Island in Changwon, South Gyeongsang, and the other to Gau Island in Gangjin County, South Jeolla.

Jeo Island, Changwon

Jeo Island is the southernmost island in Changwon, a city in South Gyeongsang. It is known for its unusual shape resembling a pig. Originally named The Bridge on the River Kwai, this bridge stretches out over the East Sea to Jeo Island and it is especially packed with visitors these days thanks to its newly-built floor made of glass. Now known as the Skywalk, the renovated bridge opened in March 2017, and has since become a tourist hot spot.

Jeo Island itself is only 2.2 square kilometers (543 acres), and has a small population of 95 residents. The journey to Jeo Island is long and difficult - it not only takes an hour by car to get to the island from Changwon City Hall, but the road itself is bumpy and uneven. But despite the rough trek, the parking lot at the entrance of the Skywalk is always full. The Skywalk has, on average, 4,700 visitors each weekend, and last spring, soon after it first opened, about 13,000 people visited in one day. Since reopening in 2017, the bridge has had over one million visitors.

The bridge was originally built in 1987, when the population of the island was about 100. Although it was not far from shore, people depended on boats to get to and from the island. Kim Jeong-chil, a fifth-generation native of Jeo Island, said, “The people could no longer stand by and watch the children have such a hard time getting to school.”

“With a 20 million won ($17,770) donation from Jeo Island residents and help from the city of Masan, we were able to build a bridge.”

The original bridge, which was 170 meters (558 feet) long and two meters wide, however, did not last very long. It was originally built as a footbridge, but the bridge was soon used by cars. The city government was worried that the bridge would collapse and built another bridge specifically for cars next to the original in 2004. The old bridge was left for people to walk on.

The footbridge gained popularity after people started calling it the “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” noticing that it resembled the bridge featured in a movie of the same name. The bridge was also used in dramas and commercials, attracting more visitors to the location. Last year, the old bridge was reborn as the Skywalk.

Even during the heat wave in the beginning of August, the Skywalk was teeming with people. Visitors must cover their shoes before stepping on the Skywalk to prevent any damage to the glass floor. The Skywalk stretches 15 meters above the crashing waves, and despite being told that the floor is made of sturdy, four-layered tempered glass, many people hold on to the rails tightly and scream as they cross the bridge.

Of the visitors to the Skywalk, only a few actually enter Jeo Island. Most people just come for the bridge and leave. However, those who do come into the island enjoy taking a stroll on Beach Road.

The Beach Road is a trail that follows the sea, and it is made up of three different courses. Some people like to walk along the sea and also follow the trail all the way up the top of Mount Yongdu. Those who reach the observatory can look across and take in the view of Geoje Island and the city of Tongyeong.

The evening is a popular time for visitors to visit the Skywalk because it offers a spectacular view of the sunset. Once the sun sets completely, the bridge lights up in green, pink and purple hues, and the speakers on the bridge play songs from the 1970s and ’80s.

Gau Island, Gangjin County

The House of Dasan, Baekryun Temple and Wolchulsan National Park are well-known sites that people seek out when they travel to Gangjin County, South Jeolla. Others visit Gangjin to eat the famous eel dish that hails from the region. However, one place in particular best represents the beauty of Gangjin - Gau Island, which became popular after a bridge was made to connect the island to land.

Gau Island is quite far from the shore. Visitors must drive at least half an hour to get from the Gangjin County Office to the island. The tiny island, about 0.32 square kilometers in total, is home to 31 people living in 14 households.

Gau Island can only be accessed by foot via a suspension bridge made of wood. Cars are not allowed on the island.

The bridge was built in 2012 and became a local tourist attraction in 2015. There were 900,000 visitors to the island just last year alone. Kang Seong-nam, an employee at the Gangjin County Office, said, “Over the weekend, we have between 10,000 to 20,000 visitors lining up to cross the bridge.”

Gau Island made a name for itself thanks to the bridge, but that is not the only reason people are drawn to the small enclave. Without any cars on the island, it is free from exhaust and noise, an impressive sight for many city dwellers. Once people enter Gau Island, time seems to slow down.

The island’s name, Gau - Korean for ox yoke - comes from the fact that it does in fact look like the wooden beam that connects two cows while they plow a field. But despite its name, most of the islanders work in the fishing industry. The sea surrounding the island is the perfect place to catch gray mullets and even rare fish species such as stingrays and black porgies. At the nearby mud flats, spoon worms, manila clams, cockles and oysters are also commonly found.

The island is covered in trees, and silver magnolia trees can easily be found. At the very top of the mountain is a huge tower made of celadon. The celadon building serves as the island’s observatory and a zip-line station. The zip line offers riders a 973-meter ride down to the sea in a blink of an eye.
