Hyundai Autron teams up on vehicle software

Hyundai Autron, an automotive component subsidiary of Hyundai Motor, announced on Thursday it has joined forces with American company Wind River to develop a software platform for next-generation smart vehicles.

Wind River is a developer of embedded software for various fields - from aerospace to industrial, medical and automotive.

“The partnership is meant to secure credibility and stability for next-generation electronic operating systems within connected and autonomous vehicles,” Hyundai Autron said in a release.

The two companies will work on a standardized software platform that can help various embedded technologies such as high-end semiconductors, network in and out of the vehicle and over-the-air updates. The platform is set for completion by 2022. The partners will also share intellectual properties and other outcomes of the joint research.

As automobiles increasingly transform into smart devices, Hyundai Motor Group, the country’s top auto-making conglomerate, has been collaborating with a number of top-notch global tech firms to secure core technologies needed for future mobility since 2012. Hyundai Autron has been playing an essential role in developing software to that end.

“There are only a few global companies including us that have special technology in software for vehicles,” said a Hyundai Autron spokesman. “Our role within Hyundai Motor Group will become more important, given that we have core technologies that will determine smart car competitiveness.”
