Women’s handball team reaches 2nd straight final

Korea reached the women’s handball finals for the second straight Asian Games on Monday.

Korea routed Thailand 40-13 in the semifinals at GOR Popki Cibubur in Jakarta, Indonesia, to secure at least a silver medal at the 18th Asiad.

Korea is the defending women’s champion and has won six of seven gold medals in women’s handball at the Asian Games, having only missed out in 2010.

Korea built a 16-7 lead at halftime and kept piling on in the second half, with Choi Su-min leading the onslaught with nine goals and Kim Seon-hwa contributing eight goals.

Ratliffe leads Korea to big win over Philippines

Defending champion Korea upset the Philippines 91-82 to reach the men’s basketball semifinals at the 18th Asian Games on Monday, overcoming a one-man wrecking crew from the NBA with a fourth-quarter rally.

Ricardo Ratliffe, a U.S.-born center with Korean citizenship, led all players with 30 points at Gelora Bung Karno Basketball Hall, while the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Filipino-American guard Jordan Clarkson had 25 points for the losing team.

Korea entered the final frame down 65-64, but forward Jeon Jun-beom changed that 41 seconds in with a three-pointer. And that would be the theme for Korea for the rest of the game. After Ratliffe’s dunk put Korea up 69-68, Heo Il-young dialed in from long distance to give Korea a 72-68 lead.

After a bit of back-and-forth, Jeon made another three-pointer 77-70 lead with 5:16 left. Clarkson responded with a layup at the other end, but Kim Sun-hyung’s three-pointer put Korea ahead by 80-72. With 3:56 to go, Kim was fouled as he laid one in, and made the free throw to complete the three-point play for an 83-74 advantage.

Jeon then drained a three-pointer to make it 89-76.
