좁은 사각의 링. 그 안에는 마치 '동물의 왕국'과도 같은 세상사가 모두 담겨있었습니다. 둘 중의 한 사람이 나가떨어지는 순간까지 뒤엉켜 싸우는 사각의 링은 종종 반칙이 난무하기도 했지만 그들은 맨몸과 맨주먹으로 서로를 상대했기에 사람들은 손에 땀을 쥐고 경기를 지켜봤습니다.
Inside this small square ring is a world whose affairs resemble that of an animal kingdom. Foul play abounds inside this ring where two people fight until one gives out. Onlookers watch anxiously as contestants strip down to their bare hands.

송강호 주연의 영화 < 반칙왕 > 에서도 나약한 은행원이었던 주인공은 사각의 링 위에서 세상사에 억눌렸던 일상을 판타지로 극복해갑니다. 헤드록. 어슴푸레 잊혀가던 프로레슬링 용어는 영화 덕에 다시 살아나 일상에 유행하기도 했었죠. 실제로 지난 1960년대와 70년대를 풍미한 프로레슬링은 단순한 스포츠 이상의 의미로 한국사회에 존재했습니다.
The main character in “The Foul King” starts out as a weak bank clerk who overcomes the heaviness of his mundane life through his time in the ring. Headlock, a word on the brink of being forgotten in Korean society, was brought back to life thanks to this movie. Wrestling was predominately popular in the 1960s and ‘70s, and in Korea, it was more than just a sport.

If the wrestler Rikidozan helped restore the Korean people’s pride after Japanese colonization, then the first generation of pro-wrestlers — Kim Il, Jang Young-chul and Chun Gyu-deok — threw themselves into the ring again and again to fill the sense of loss that Korean people felt after enduring Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War. Sports became a metaphor for society through Kim Il’s headbutt, Jang Young-chul’s side kick and Chun Gyu-deok’s taekwondo as they fought off their larger American competitors and Japanese archrivals. It was a time when each village had just one television, and little kids would come together to watch with endless patriotic sensation sweeping over them.

"프로레슬링은 쇼다." 논란의 그 발언으로 프로레슬링은 사양길을 걸었다지만 쇼이건 아니건 이미 그것은 중요하지 않았습니다. 사람들은 그로 인해 행복했고 의기충천했던 가상현실의 세계… 이제는 찌든 가난과 상실감에서는 벗어난 시대라고는 하지만 현실은 여전히 녹록지 않고 삶은 고달프기에… 우리는 그로부터 훨씬 훗날까지도 바로 이 사람… 이왕표를 가질 수 있었을지도 모릅니다
“Pro-wrestling is a show.” The controversial statement was perceived as the reason why pro-wrestling took a turn for the worse, but whether this is true or not is of no importance. People were happy and energized thanks to the virtual reality that was pro-wrestling. Today, even though we are far from poverty and loss, life is still tough and often wears us down. That reality makes Lee Wang-pyo relevant today.

"저도 헤드록 해드릴 수 있습니다"
지난 2015년 은퇴를 선언한 날 뉴스룸에 출연했던 그는 그보다 4년 전 노지심 선수와 함께 저를 만났을 때를 기억하고는 그렇게 말했었지요. 오늘은 좀 참아 달라면서 다음을 기약했었는데… 조금은 민망하더라도. 그때 그냥 해보시라고 할 걸 그랬습니다.
“I can also do a headlock.”
The day he appeared on “JTBC Newsroom” in 2015 was the day he announced his retirement. He was recalling a conversation I had with him and No Ji-shim four years prior when he mentioned the headlock. I asked him to wait and promised I would let him do it next time. Though it might have been embarrassing, I should have asked him to do it that time.
