Foreigners rank favorite dishes for Chuseok

Sept 19,2018
Bulgogi, or marinated beef, topped the list of foreigners’ favorite dishes on the family dinner table on the Chuseok holidays, according to a survey by CJ CheilJedang on Tuesday.

The company asked 100 foreigners in Korea and in another 21 countries to pick some of their favorite local dishes eaten during the Chuseok holiday, which falls between Sept. 22 and 26 this year. The holiday, along with Lunar New Year, is known for multiple generations of families getting together to enjoy big meals.

The most popular answers were meat dishes. Fourty-six percent of respondents said they preferred bulgogi-which is generally popular among foreigners. This was followed by galbi-jjim, or braised short beef ribs (with 36 percent), galbi-tang, or short rib soup (26 percent), tteokgalbi, minced beef patties (20 percent) and Korean style meatballs (16 percent). Multiple answers were allowed.

Songpyeon, a moon-shaped rice cake with fillings, was voted as the Chuseok dish that respondents most wanted to introduce to their own families. Thirty-eight percent gave this answer, narrowly followed by bulgogi at 35 percent.

“Dishes like bulgogi, japchae (a stir-fried noodle dish) or Korean-style meat balls are not too spicy so they’re not a difficult Korean dish to try,” said Saho Aoyama, a 30-year-old Japanese who participated in the survey. “And they are iconic Korean dishes so I think it would be nice to introduce them to my family at home.”
