“If you step on someone’s foot in Mongolia, offer them a handshake.”

This is today’s anchor briefing.

“If you step on someone’s foot in Mongolia, offer them a handshake.”

This saying mirrors a long-held tradition. Stepping on someone’s foot in Mongolia is perceived as a sign of disrespect. It can also be interpreted as someone saying, “I would like to fight you.” This is because, for nomads, feet are much more important than their head and heart. If you are to step on someone’s foot, you should apologize and offer your right hand for a handshake. Only then could the other person offer their hand in good grace. Thus, a handshake, when seen in another light, is a greeting to save someone’s life.

* perceive: 감지[인지]하다

Two sets of eyes looking at each other, with the right temperature and force, is a form of greeting. Tomorrow, the political leaders of South and North Korea will once again hold hands.

The memories of being deeply moved six months ago seem to have long dissipated from our minds. In addition, the fact that the two met a second time is hazy. Thinking back, the popular saying “What does it really matter?” seems to best describe our thoughts about how we counted the seconds the handshake of the century lasted between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

“Nevertheless” why must these two people come together to shake hands… There is probably one answer. Both parties want to live peacefully, without any incidents.

“If you step on someone’s foot in Mongolia, offer them a handshake.”

Are there still people who think an accidental foot stepping between South and North Korea will lead to a real fight…? The three summits abated criticism like “[A fight] could happen since North Korea is still South Korea’s main adversary,” by saying “No. We both feel like we have passed that point.” Then, at the very least, I guess we can agree with the peaceful coexistence.

“Trust is not a prerequisite for conversation, but the result of it.”
- Park Han-sik and Kang Kuk-jin

Moreover, if the conversations between South and North Korea results in peaceful and comfortable circumstances for both parties…
