Paris Baguette replaces plastic bags with paper

Paris Baguette, Korea’s largest bakery chain, announced that it has gotten rid of plastic bags at all of its stores in Korea and replaced them with paper ones as of Monday, the latest move in a series of efforts by retailers to cut plastic waste.

The bakery chain will charge 50 won ($0.05) to consumers for a paper bag to encourage them to bring their own bags. If consumers bring back a paper bag with a receipt, they can get a refund.

After the bakery signed an agreement with the Ministry of Environment to curb plastic bag use in July, it test-ran the initiative in select stores during September.
