SPC to run Singapore Shake Shack

Oct 11,2018
U.S. burger chain Shake Shack will be launched in Singapore next year by Korean food giant SPC group.

SPC group announced in a press release on Wednesday that it recently obtained business rights to run Shake Shack in Singapore, where it plans to open the first store during the first half of next year. SPC has been running Shake Shack branches in Korea since 2016.

The first Shake Shack in Singapore will be in the Jewel Changi Airport, due to open next year. A new addition to Changi Airport is to hold a hotel, gardens and commercial facilities. SPC plans to build more than 10 Shake Shack branches in the city-state by 2024.

“Singapore is a geographically important location for Shake Shack, and we have been constantly looking for the right time [to start business there],” said Michael Kark, vice president of international licensed business at Shake Shack.

“We’re very glad to work at Singapore with SPC group, which is already conducting a successful business in Korea.”

Shake Shack selects local partners to work with when developing branches overseas.

According to an SPC spokesman, the Korean food company was selected as the business operator in Singapore as the result of a bid local competitors also took part in. Shake Shack did not disclose who the other candidates were.

“We weren’t really informed what the evaluation standards were that led us to win the bid, but the Korean [Shake Shack] business has been successful so far and we’re also the only regional partner [among 13 countries] that make [Shake Shack] buns,” said an SPC spokesman.

Since 2016, SPC has built seven Shake Shacks in Korea.

Its first branch in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, is now the No. 1 Shake Shack store in the world by sales.
