National Sports Festival begins in North Jeolla

The 99th National Sports Festival will kick off today in Iksan, North Jeolla.

Starting with the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. today, a total of 24,000 athletes will compete in 47disciplines - 46 medal sports and one exhibition sport.

Swimmer Park Tae-hwan, who skipped the Korean team at the 2018 Asian Games, will appear at the National Sports Festival this week. Last year, Park won five of his races to win the MVP award at the end of the event. Kim Seo-yeong, who won gold in the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the Asian Games, will also compete at the National Sports Festival.

In athletics, Kim Kuk-young, Korea’s 100-meter record holder, will attempt to redeem himself after a medal-less finish from the Asian Games. He will compete in four events at the festival - the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay. In women’s athletics, Jung Hye-lim, Asian Games gold medalist in hurdles, will compete for her second gold of the year.

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Jin Jong-oh will compete in the 10-meter air pistol and mixed team 50-meter pistol event. Na Ah-reum, who won four golds at the 2018 Asian Games, will attempt to continue her success in cycling at the National Sports Festival.
