Mobis develops new headlamp

Hyundai Mobis has developed a car headlamp system that addresses some of the deficiencies inherent in earlier technologies.

The auto parts affiliate of Hyundai Motor said Wednesday that it has completed work on its Advanced Adaptive Driving Beam (AADB) one and a half years after it started committing resources to the project.

The AADB is an upgraded version of the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB), currently available in the market on some premium cars. An ADB controls the headlight to avoid blinding drivers in other vehicles by selectively shading the light emitted. The adaptive beam system allows a wider view for the driver, especially at night.

The ADB is at times ineffective since it relies on cameras installed on the front of the vehicle. The system isn’t able to preemptively respond to overtaking cars or cars coming around a curve.

Hyundai Mobis said that the AADB collects more data from the cameras and utilizes radar, networked navigation equipment and sensors for steering to improve the headlamp’s performance.

The upgraded cameras on the AADB can collect data on driving lanes while radars collect data on overtaking cars. Internet-connected navigation devices collect information on the course of the roads being traveled.

“The intelligent headlamp will be essential to safety in the autonomous driving era,” said the company in a written statement Wednesday.

“At night, a car has to be able to sense lanes, sign boards and multiple objects on the road for autonomous driving,” the statement said.

Hyundai Mobis aims to take the upper hand in the light industry, having registered for six related patents in Korea and 12 globally. It is mass producing cameras, blind-spot collision warning systems, headlamps and navigation systems required for future cars.

“The existing intelligent headlamp needs to be upgraded based on the understanding of a diverse range of technologies,” said Mirco Goetz, director of Hyundai Mobis’ lamp engineering group.

“It won’t be easy for other lamp manufacturers to close the gap with Hyundai Mobis in a short amount of time.”

Hyundai Mobis has obtained orders for lamps totalling $340 million since 2010.
