Global K-pop sensation BTS have had many reasons to celebrate lately - their album “Love Yourself: Answer” topped the Billboard charts in August, they were invited to speak at the United Nations, they appeared on a number of popular American talk shows and were included on the “Next Generation Leaders” list in Time magazine. To top it all off, the Korean government honored the group for their record-breaking success by awarding them the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit at the 2018 Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards on Wednesday.

BTS are now the epitome of cultural ambassadors and have been praised for “spreading and developing Korean pop culture,” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

“We have been abroad for a long time and a lot of people have told us that they were learning Korean,” member Kim Seok-jin, better known as Jin, said while accepting the honor on Wednesday evening. “I was very proud, and I will try harder to spread our culture abroad.”

Fresh off the European leg of their world tour, the boys are at the top of their game. At each stop along the way of their first tour through the continent, the group’s ecstatic European fans were there to welcome them.

BTS fever hits Paris

On Oct. 20, BTS performed the last of its European shows at AccorHotels Arena in Paris. Each stop they made along the way - two shows at the O2 Arena in London, one show at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, two shows at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin and two shows in Paris - sold out in minutes.

BTS fans, who call themselves ARMY, camped out around the venues for days before each of the shows hoping to get the best floor seats. They sang along to the group’s songs in Korean and were eager and upbeat to get the chance to meet the members of the group.

Fans from neighboring countries, including Italy, flew to Paris just for the performance. The fervor was so intense that some fans fainted during the show.

French local newspaper Le Figaro called BTS “The Beatles of the YouTube Generation” and wrote about how the group provides hope to a generation of young people afraid to face a world full of possibilities and failures.

Boy band as cultural ambassadors

The rising popularity of BTS has led to increased interest in Korea all around the world. The state-run Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation cashed in on the group’s success and promoted traditional Korean food at the arena. On Oct. 19, the day of the first Paris concert, the company rented out the arena’s VIP lounge and invited major buyers from France to introduce Korean fermented foods and ingredients, including kimchi.

“It’s usually hard to find this many local buyers at once for our food events,” said Kim Min-ho, the manager of the European branch of the organization. “But thanks to BTS, we are able to promote our traditional food.”

President Moon Jae-in, who met with the septet on Oct. 14 at the Korea-France Friendship Concert held at The 13th Art Theater in Paris, thanked the group for serving as cultural ambassadors.

“Music and performances transcend geographical and racial boundaries. [The group] broke through language barriers and came to this place [only] with their musical passion,” the Blue House wrote on Twitter on Oct. 14.

During an interview with Time magazine, Kim Nam-joon, better known as RM, said, “It’s just an honor to be called an ambassador of Korean K-pop.”

Member Suga added, “Many in our parents’ generation were born right after the Korean War, so they grew up not being able to eat or dress well. But our generation - we, our parents’ sons - are spreading Korean culture as its representatives. Those from my parents’ or my grandparents’ generation are very proud of us.”

Hardship followed by success

Although the septet made high-profile appearances all over Europe, some of the members struggled with their health during the tour. Their concert series in Europe came after a succession of shows in the United States.

Member Kim Tae-hyung - better known as V - was not feeling well and broke down in tears during the concert in Paris, perhaps because he was unable to do his best. Fans showed their support and flooded Twitter with tweets featuring the hashtag #GetWellSoonTaehyung.

They were also supportive of Jimin, who was unable to attend a recording of BBC’s “The Graham Norton Show,” and Jungkook who injured his heel ahead of the show in London.

The bumps and bruises along the way were made a little better when the group announced that they had renewed their seven-year contract, which was set to expire next year, with its agency Big Hit Entertainment on Oct. 18.

“We highly respect our director Bang Si-hyuk who has provided us with a new perspective on music and the world,” said the members in a statement on the day. “We will do our best for our global fans who have continuously been supporting us.

The agency added, “We have renewed our contract so that the members can pursue a more stable and long-term career in music. We will also be supporting and investing more on our current 100-member staff team.”

트위터에는 '#GetWellSoonTaehyung(괜찮아질 거야 태형)'이라며 뷔의 본명과 함께 응원의 해시태그가 등장했다.
