마지막 북극곰
북극곰을 사육했다는 첫 기록은 1253년 잉글랜드로 거슬러 올라간다. 국왕 헨리 3세가 사슬에 묶어 한 마리를 키웠다. 가끔은 런던을 가로지르는 템스 강 변에 내보내기도 했다. 당시엔 노르웨이ㆍ아이슬란드 무역상들이 북극곰을 사로잡아 각국 왕족과 귀족에게 팔았다니, 아마 그렇게 사들인 곰이었던 것 같다.
내에서는 1955년 창경원 동물원에서 첫선을 보였다. 네덜란드에서 들여온 암ㆍ수 한 쌍이었다. 하지만 안타깝게도 불량 사료 때문에 얼마 안 가 폐사했다. 창경원은 이듬해 네덜란드에서 한 쌍을 새로 들여왔다. 이 북극곰 부부는 4년 뒤 크리스마스에 창경원에서 새끼 두 마리를 낳았다.
70년대 들어 국내 곳곳에 동물원이 생기면서 너도나도 북극곰을 들여왔다. 많을 때는 20마리 가까운 북극곰이 국내 동물원에 있었다. 그만큼 인기가 높았다. 어찌 보면 귀여운 외모에, 연신 고개를 끄덕거리기도 하는 게 재롱을 떠는 것처럼 보여 관람객을 끌어모았다. 그러나 사실 고개를 계속 주억거리는 것 등은 좁은 공간에 갇힌 스트레스 때문에 하는 행동이었다. 더위에 피부병도 자주 앓았다.
유럽에서는 북극곰을 키우지 않겠다고 선언하는 동물원이 잇따랐다. 우리나라에서도 “여름이 무더운 나라의 동물원에 북극곰을 두는 건 학대에 가깝다”는 인식이 번졌다. 결국 국내 동물원들은 북극곰을 더는 들여오지 않게 됐다. 곰들이 하나둘 세상을 뜨면서 숫자가 줄었다. 그리고 지난 17일 국내 마지막 북극곰이었던 에버랜드 ‘통키’가 눈을 감았다. 95년 창원 돝섬동물원에서 태어난 지 스물세 해 만이었다. 북극곰 평균 수명(25세)에 가까운 나이였다.

북극곰은 우리나라에서도, 또 전 세계적으로도 동물원을 변화시킨 1등 공신이다. 동물원 북극곰 등의 고통을 이해한 동물 보호가들은 극단적으로 동물원을 없애자고까지 주장했다. 이에 반응해 선진 동물원들은 ‘동물을 보여주는 곳’에서 ‘생물 다양성을 보전하고 생명 존중 인식을 심는 곳’으로 바꿔 자리매김했다. 내부 환경은 자연에 가깝게 바꿨다. 북극곰처럼 자연에 가까운 환경을 만들어주는 게 불가능하면 아예 들여놓지 않는다.
국내에서도 이런 변화가 일고 있다. 하지만 녹록지 않다. “동물 복지 예산을 늘려 달라”고 지자체에 요청하면 “주민 복지 챙기기도 빠듯하다”는 답이 돌아온다고 한다. 그렇다고 소득 3만 달러가 넘는 나라에서 마냥 동물 복지를 나 몰라라 할 수는 없는 일이다. 통키의 마지막 소식을 들은 국민도 ‘사람과 동물이 함께 행복한 세상’을 떠올렸을 터다.
