"쓰려면 그 열 배를 읽는다. 그게 글쓰기 윤리다." 며칠 전 세상을 떠난 비평가 김윤식 선생에게도 글쓰기는 쉬운 작업이 아니었던 모양입니다. 5년 전 당시, 여든을 바라보는 나이에도 그는 쓰기 위해 수없이 읽는다고 했습니다. 특히나 젊은 작가들의 작품을 평가하기 위해서는 작품당 최소한 세 번 이상씩 읽고 나서야 펜을 들었다는 당대를 대표하는 문학비평가.

“In order to write once, I read ten times. It is my ethics to write.” These were the words of renowned literature critic Kim Yoon-sik, who passed away a couple of days ago. From his words, we can detect that writing is not easy work. Five years ago, at the age of 79, Kim told us that despite his old age, he constantly reads so he can write. He even disclosed that in order to write a review for a recently published novel by a young writer, he reads it at least three times before even attempting to write a single word.

가르치려 들지 않았던 그의 가르침은 낮은 울림이 되어 각인되었습니다. 그의 말처럼. 열 배를 투자해 하나라도 얻게 된다면 차라리 그것은 요행한 일이라고나 할까. 조바심의 속도와 변화의 속도는 같을 수가 없어서 사람들은 끝내 체념하기도 하지요.

His wise words of wisdom, which were not meant to educate others, still leave a deep impression on us all. Like his words imply, we are lucky to even earn one thing after investing a tremendous amount in our endeavors. We often worry about why things aren’t changing faster. This is why we almost always give up on change itself.

불쑥 내려간 바깥 기온과, 달력으로 기억되는 오늘은 2년 전, 모두의 움직임이 시작된 바로 그날입니다. 우리 정말 대단하지 않습니까? 세상을 바꿔낸 시민들의 말처럼. 작은 촛불이 가져온 변화는 실로 거대했지만, 촛불 이후 2년, 세상은 얼마만큼 앞으로 나아간 것일까. 스스로 대단했던 우리는 여전히 견고한 격차와 편견과 갈등 앞에서 똑같은 일상에 치어가고 있는 것은 아닐까.

Today is the two-year anniversary of when everything started to change. “Have we not accomplished something incredible?” Like the words from the citizens who were present and responsible for it, the change that one small flickering candle brought was indeed incredible. However, two years have passed since then, and we are left asking ourselves: How much has society changed? Are we not still surrounded by the same differences and prejudices that experience in our everyday lives?

그러나… "쓰려면 그 열 배를 읽는다. 그것이 글쓰기의 윤리다" 책 한 권쯤은 눈 감고도 써 내려갈 것만 같았던 노학자는. 쉬이 얻는 것은 존재하지 않으며, 존재하더라도 튼튼하지 않다는 것을 말하고 있습니다. 한 번 쓰려면 그 열 배를 읽어야 하는 것처럼 한 걸음 더 나아가려면, 그 열 배를 애써야 하기에…

However… “In order to write once, I read ten times. It is my ethics to write.” The old scholar who could have easily written one book with his eyes closed is telling us that nothing is easily obtainable. Even if something exists, it will never be sturdy enough to last. Like having to read ten times in order to write once, we need to put in ten times the effort in order to take one step forward.
