Ryu So-yeon leads the pack after day 1 of Japan Classic

Ryu So-yeon took a one-shot lead after the first round of the Toto Japan Classic at Seta Golf Club in Shiga, Japan, on Friday.

With a bogey-free round of seven under par, 65, Ryu took a one shot lead ahead of Kim In-kyung, Shin Ji-yai and Nasa Hataoka of Japan. Ryu got off to a quick start with a birdie on the first hole and by adding another, she finished the front nine at two under par. Ryu slowly made her way up the leaderboard with three straight birdies from the 11 to 13th holes. By finishing the first round with back-to-back birdies on the last two holes, Ryu took a solo lead after the first round of the tournament.

In addition to Ryu, a total of six Korean golfers started the tournament in the top-10. Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, the world’s No.1 ranked player, shot two under par to tie 28th with Amy Yang and Nelly Korda.
