Nexen Heroes to become Kiwoom’s team next year

The Nexen Heroes announced Tuesday they signed a new sponsorship deal with the local securities firm Kiwoom Securities.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club said the five-year deal will be worth 10 billion won ($8.9 million) a year, and will give Kiwoom the naming rights for the team. Assuming the club chooses to keep the name Heroes, it will become the Kiwoom Heroes next year.

The deal was signed Tuesday, and the Heroes said the official signing ceremony will take place in January next year, at which time the new club name and logo will be unveiled.

The Heroes, based in Seoul, joined the KBO in 2008 under the name Woori Heroes, with the company Woori Tobacco holding the naming rights.

They later reached a new deal with Nexen Tire in 2010 and were renamed the Nexen Heroes.
