OCN demon hit takes lead to dark side: Kim Dong-wook studied exorcism and shamanism to prepare for psychic role

OCN’s series “Son: The Guest” aired its last episode several weeks ago, but actor Kim Dong-wook still seems possessed by his psychic character.

The mystery thriller series features a shaman, a priest and a detective who have all lost their family members to people possessed by the demon “Son.” The three team up to fight crimes committed by the supernatural power. “Son” is a demon that wanders around specific areas on particular days of each month and follows people around to interrupt their lives. It is tradition to avoid scheduling major events, such as weddings or moving house, on these days.

Prior to the release of the series, many people thought that the themes of the program - exorcism and shamanism - were inappropriate for a TV drama. But that turned out to be a mistake.

Local movie cable channel OCN is well-known for airing shows with brutal scenes and dealing with heavy topics. “Voice” (2017) and “Tunnel” (2017) are two examples. “Son: The Guest” turned out to be a big hit, earning the highest ratings on Nov. 1 among programs aired at 11 p.m.

In the series, Kim plays Yoon Hwa-pyeong, a psychic taxi driver who helps those possessed by the demon. The role, however, was not an easy one - he pulled all-nighters to get the part of a psychic right. He had never played one before.

“I filmed more than a hundred takes in five months,” said Kim during an interview with the press on Nov. 5 at a cafe in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul.

“My grandfather lives in Cheongsan Island, on the southern coast, the main filming site is Icheon in Gyeonggi, and in the last week, I’ve traveled to Cheongju in North Chungcheong, Samcheok in Gangwon and Ganghwa Island in Incheon. I’ve filmed at night, slept in the morning and traveled to different filming sites in the afternoon.”

Kim researched and studied regional shamans and exorcists prior to the filming, searching for video clips about exorcism and possessions. He did not, however, want to rely on and copy the acting of others who had taken on similar roles. He wanted to build his own, unique character.

“I wanted the character of Hwa-pyeong to have a solid structure, with a character of his own,” he said. “I kept on imagining him not as a person, but as another being.”

The character was also mentally challenging. In the drama, the demon targets people’s weaknesses - their deepest fears or hatreds - and possesses their bodies. Kim’s role was to chase after the demon and save the people who are possessed.

“I had a lot of dreams while filming the series,” he said. “I also had nightmares often times. In these dreams, I was always involved in dangerous situations, escaping from something, or saving someone. Later on, I said to myself, ‘well, at least I am saving people in my dreams.’

“At the site, we were all in a good mood. Everyone was very respectful of each other.”

That may be due in part to his previous work with actor Kim Jae-uck, who played the role of the priest in the series. The two first met 11 years ago during the filming of MBC’s romantic series “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince” (2007). In the series, Kim Dong-wook plays a playful cafe waiter and Kim Jae-uck plays the taciturn chef.

“We have basic trust in each other,” said Kim Dong-wook. So “whatever we act, it goes smoothly. Anything that doesn’t work out, we try to solve together.

“In fact, Jung Eun-chae [the detective character from ‘Son: The Guest’] might have felt left out when the three of us were drinking together because I was always busy speaking with Kim Jae-uck.”

The public is asking for a second season of “Son: The Guest.” They are also anticipating Kim Dong-wook’s appearance in the upcoming third and fourth seasons of the webtoon-based “Along with the Gods” movie series, where he plays the role of Kim Su-hong.

In the first season, the character is buried alive after his friend thinks he accidently killed him.

“I’m very happy that people want to watch the sequel to the movie series,” Kim said. “I will definitely appear in the movie if they want me to.”

Director of the film series Kim Yong-hwa is also quite positive about his anticipated appearance. At the Busan International Film Festival last month, the director mentioned that he takes into consideration what kind of characters the public wants.

Regarding the actor’s relationship with the director, he said it is good and that the two are close.

“People ask me whether I am disappointed by the fact that I don’t appear much in the second season of the film series, but not at all,” he said. “I believe that the director had a big picture of how to make the movie successful.

“I gained more self-confidence and a sense of responsibility after filming the movie. I still have a long way to go, but I am making progress.”

김동욱 신들린 연기 비결 “가위 눌려 가며 촬영했다”

11월 6, 7, 16, 17, 26, 27일. 이번 달 ‘손 없는 날’이다. 사람들의 활동을 방해하는 악귀가 없는 날이라 하여 지금도 이사ㆍ결혼 등 각종 대소사를 치를 때마다 중요하게 고려되는 요소다. OCN 수목극 ‘손 the guest’(권소라ㆍ서재원 극본, 김홍선 연출)는 바로 그 ‘손’에 관한 이야기다. 동해 계양진 마을에 나타난 악령 박일도에 빙의된, 손이라 불리는 사람들에 의해 가족을 잃은 세 사람, 영매(김동욱 분)ㆍ구마 신부(김재욱 분)ㆍ경찰(정은채 분)이 힘을 모아 그를 찾아 나서며 맞서 싸우는 내용이다.

한회가 멀다 하고 각종 부마자(귀신 들린 사람)와 구마 의식이 등장하는 탓에 시작 전까지만 해도 기대보다는 우려의 목소리가 컸다. 엑소시즘과 샤머니즘 모두 매니악한 소재로 드라마로 방영하기엔 적합하지 않다는 이유에서다. 하지만 ‘보이스’ ‘터널’ 등을 통해 장르물 명가로 거듭난 OCN은 뚝심 있게 밀어붙였고 지난 1일 목요일 오후 11시 동시간대 시청률 1위(4.1%), 화제성 1위로 종영했다.
특히 윤화평 역을 맡은 배우 김동욱(35)은 귀신을 보는 영매인 데다 악령에 감응해 앞으로 일어날 일을 미리 보는 설정으로 시시각각 다른 인물로 변하는 소름 돋는 연기로 화제를 모았다. 영화 ‘신과함께’ 1ㆍ2편에서 군 복무 중 억울한 죽임을 당해 원귀가 되어 떠돌다가 49번째 귀인이 된 김수홍 역할로 ‘재발견’된 데 이어 연타석 홈런을 날린 것이다. 2004년 데뷔 이후 드라마 ‘커피프린스 1호점’(2007)으로 눈도장을 찍고, 영화 ‘국가대표’(2009)로 신인상을 휩쓴 이후 오랜만의 흥행작이다.

5일 서울 삼성동에서 만난 김동욱은 “후련하다”고 했지만, 아직 드라마 후유증에서 빠져나오지 못한 듯했다. 박일도의 흔적을 쫓아 전국을 이 잡듯 뒤지고 다닌 데다 각종 악귀를 상대하며 감정적으로도 한계까지 몰아붙인 탓이다. “5개월 동안 100회차를 넘게 찍었어요. 할아버지 집은 전남 청산도고, 세트는 경기 이천인데 마지막 주는 충북 청주ㆍ강원 삼척ㆍ인천 강화도를 돌아다니면서 찍었으니 말 다 했죠. 밤에는 찍고, 오전엔 자고, 오후에 이동하면서.”
작품을 준비하는 동안 동해 지역 세습무와 굿을 비롯해 빙의 및 구마 영상을 찾아보았다. 특정 작품을 참조하기보다는 연기 톤을 만드는 데 집중했다. “사실 제가 빙의되는 건 짧은 순간이잖아요. 다른 빙의자들은 기계음이 섞인 목소리 등 특수효과가 많으니까 오히려 이성적인 모습이었으면 좋겠다고 생각했어요. 아주 익숙하고 자연스러운 폭력이랄까. 그래서 오히려 화평이란 인물에 대한 토대를 탄탄하게 구축하고, 다른 사람 혹은 사람이 아닌 다른 존재가 되었을 때의 모습을 머릿속으로 계속 이미지 트레이닝을 했어요.”

드라마에서 악령은 마음속 증오나 두려움 등 인간의 가장 약한 부분을 틈타 사람 몸에 들어온다. 극 중 김동욱이 끊임없이 위기에 봉착하는 이유 역시 그가 슬퍼하고 절망에 빠져야 그 속의 악이 극대화되기 때문이다. “그래선지 촬영하는 동안 꿈을 정말 많이 꿨어요. 가위도 여러 차례 눌리고. 꿈에서도 자꾸 위험한 상황에 처하고 누군가를 구하고 도망치고 하더라고요. 나중에는 ‘그래, 꿈에서라도 사람들을 구하니 다행이다’ 했어요. 그래도 현장 분위기는 정말 좋았어요. 워낙 감정적으로 힘들다 보니 서로 배려를 많이 했죠.”
‘커피프린스’를 함께 한 동갑내기 친구 김재욱과 함께한 것도 큰 도움이 됐다. 신인 시절 공유ㆍ이언과 함께 꽃미남 4인방으로 호흡을 맞춘 이들은 11년 만에 한 작품에서 다시 만났다. “기본적으로 서로에 대한 신뢰가 있죠. 어떤 연기를 해도 받아줄 수 있을 거란 믿음도 있고. 해결이 안 되는 부분이 생기면 같이 풀어나갔어요. 은채랑 셋이 술 마실 때마다 추억에 젖어서 그때 얘길 하도 많이 해서 좀 소외감을 느꼈을 수도 있을 것 같아요.” 김재욱뿐 아니라 무당 육광 역을 맡은 이원종과도 남다른 브로맨스 케미를 선보이며 많은 응원을 받았다.

한 치 앞을 예측할 수 없는 전개와 모든 출연진의 빈틈 없는 열연 덕분에 ‘손 the guest’ 시즌2 제작 요청이 빗발치고 있다. 영화 ‘신과함께’ 3ㆍ4편 제작이 확정되면서 변호사 진기한 역에 김동욱을 원하는 목소리도 높아졌다. 1ㆍ2편에서 사법고시를 준비했던 수홍 역과 연결고리가 존재하기 때문이다. 김동욱은 “작품의 뒷이야기를 궁금해하고 다시 보고 싶어한다는 건 너무 기분 좋은 일”이라며 “불러주시면 당연히 할 것”이라고 말했다.
‘국가대표’에 이어 ‘신과함께’까지 함께 한 김용화 감독 역시 긍정적으로 검토 중이다. 김 감독은 지난달 부산국제영화제에서 “관객들이 어떤 이야기와 인물을 좋아하는지 조사를 할 예정”이라며 “제가 생각하는 부분과 크게 다르지 않다면 열심히 시나리오를 써 보겠다”고 말했다. 두 사람은 쌍끌이 흥행을 이끈 서로를 ‘귀인’으로 칭할 정도로 각별한 사이다.

김동욱 역시 김용화 감독에 대한 신뢰를 표했다. “2편에서 편집이 많이 된 게 아쉽지 않냐고 하는데 전혀 그렇지 않아요. 관객들에게 가장 좋은 모습으로 보여드릴 수 있도록 감독님께서 가장 효과적인 방법을 찾았을 거라고 생각해요. 오히려 스스로 확신이 없었던 장면들이 편집돼서 감사하기도 하고요. 대학 진학(한예종 연극원) 후 연기를 시작해서 줄곧 자신도 없고 고민도 많았는데 ‘신과함께’ 이후 자신감이 좀 붙었거든요. 책임감도 생기고. 아직 멀었지만 이제 조금씩 성장하고 있는 것 같아요.”
