3 SK companies to share booth at exhibition

SK Group affiliates will publicize the group-wide strategy for its mobility business at a joint exhibition booth at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show scheduled for January in Las Vegas, the group said on Sunday.

Battery-making arm SK Innovation, mobile carrier SK Telecom and chipmaker SK Hynix will be sponsors of the booth at the world’s largest electronics show. It is the first time SK affiliates teamed up for the show. It is also the first time any local battery maker participated in the electronics exhibition, according to SK.

The theme of the booth will be “Innovative Mobility by SK.”

According to SK, the cooperation between the three cash-cow affiliates comes as group Chairman Chey Tae-won stresses the importance of sharing between affiliates.

Based on the collaboration, SK hopes to introduce a package of services for the mobility business, where self-driving cars and electric vehicles will be the major products in the category.

SK Innovation will introduce its lithium-ion batteries for electric cars as well as its energy storage system, a system that can store energy for later use. As the battery maker’s lithium-ion battery separator is already second in the market, the company will exhibit the product for a larger global presence, it said. Battery separators play a key role between the battery’s anode and its cathode.

Despite being a relative latecomer to the battery market, SK Innovation, which used to focus on oil refining, has been rapidly expanding in the sector. Most recently, it inked deal with German automaker Volkswagen to supply batteries.

SK Telecom will focus on autonomous car technology. One exhibition will feature quantum technology-supported lidar, or laser-based radar, capable of sensing the distance between objects around self-driving cars with better sensitivity than conventional lidar products. The upgraded lidar was developed using the technology of Switzerland-based ID Quantique. SK Telecom acquired the company in February.

SK Hynix is preparing to exhibit DRAM and NAND flash memory chips used in autonomous cars, driver assisting technologies as well as the telematics systems. Chips used in communications between data centers and cars will also be introduced.

“By integrating the top-tier technologies developed by major SK affiliates, the SK Group will excel in the future mobility market,” the group said in statement.
