‘Hotel by the River’ wins in Spain

The film “Hotel by the River,” directed by Hong Sang-soo and starring his lover, actor Kim Min-hee, was given three awards at the Gijon International Film Festival held in Spain on Nov. 24.

According to the movie’s distributor Fine Cut on Friday, the film was awarded Best Feature Film, Best Script, and actor Ki Joo-bong was named Best Actor at the festival. The major film event celebrated its 56th edition this year.

The black-and-white movie tells the story of an unlikely encounter between various characters at a hotel by the river. The film is set to premiere in Korea next year.

Hong previously took home the Best Feature Film award at the festival in 2013 with his film “Right Now, Wrong Then” (2015), while Kim was named Best Actress last year with the film “On the Beach at Night Alone” (2016), directed by Hong.

The two have been the center of controversy after admitting to having an extramarital affair in 2015. The director filed for divorce from his wife in 2016, but the case is still in court because his wife denies the break-up.
