Daum to close online board as socials dominate market

Korea’s online portal operator Daum Communications said on Monday that it will shut down its online discussion room next month.

“Agora,” considered one of the country’s largest Internet bulletin boards for online discussion, will be closed on Jan. 7, Daum said.

Since opening in 2004, more than 10 million people wrote more than 30 million messages, with some 200,000 petitions being signed by 4.5 million people.

The site, while facilitating the healthy exchange of views, has taken flak for political bias, with people engaging in countless legal battles.

Daum said that with more people using social media, interest in bulletin boards has declined.
