The world renowned German chamber orchestra Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (DKP) is holding a concert tonight under the baton of Paavo Jarvi, its artistic director.

Jarvi has been leading the orchestra since 2004, and has been taking the group to newer heights each year. One of those achievements includes the orchestra winning the Opus Klassik Award last year for Symphonic Recording of the Year (Music of the 19th Cent.) for its recording of Brahms’ Second Symphony.

The orchestra will be accompanied by violinist Hilary Hahn and together they’ll perform Mozart’s Overture from “Don Giovanni, K. 527”; his Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219; and end the evening with Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 “The Great” in C Major, D. 944.

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets range from 60,000 ($53) to 250,000 won.

THE NUTCRACKER

The Korean National Ballet is staging “The Nutcracker” in its version adapted from the ballet choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich, who worked as the art director of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater from 1964 to 1995.

The performance will start at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends and at 2 p.m. on Christmas.

There will be no performance on the 17th.

Ticket prices range from 5,000 to 90,000 won.

The Christmas season is here, which means the Universal Ballet is back with “The Nutcracker.”

The ballet, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, premiered in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and has been performed around the world for the past 124 years. The Universal Ballet premiered the piece in Korea in 1986, and performances have been sold out every year for the past 30 years.

The performance starts at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends. On Christmas Day, performances will be at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 10,000 to 100,000 won.

MATILDA

Based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 best-selling novel, this musical tells the story of a gifted young girl named Matilda who possesses telekinetic powers.

While dealing with her insensitive parents, Matilda befriends her school teacher, Miss Honey, and defends her friends from her evil principal Miss Trunchbull.

Four actors - Hwang Ye-yeong, An So-myeong, Lee Ji-na and Seol Ga-eun - play Matilda.

The musical starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

There are no shows on Mondays.

Ticket prices range from 60,000 to 140,000 won.

THE LION KING

The lions are coming to Seoul from Broadway and tickets are selling out fast. The musical “Lion King” has been seen by over 95 million people in more than 100 cities in 20 countries since its premiere in 1997.

The international tour team, which began its tour in the Philippines and then in Singapore, is currently in Daegu, performing at the Keimyung Art Center. Its three-month run at the Seoul Arts Center in southern Seoul starts next month.

Based on Disney’s 1994 animated film of the same name, the musical has been seen by over 95 million people in more than 100 cities in 20 countries since its premiere in 1997. The musical is directed by Julie Taymor with music by legendary lyricist Tim Rice and Elton John, Lebo M, Hans Zimmer and many more.

The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

Tickets range from 60,000 won to 170,000 won.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG

Created by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of Mischief Theatre Company, “The Play That Goes Wrong” has been produced in Korean and is being staged at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul.

The play premiered at the Old Red Lion Theater in London in 2012 and had its Broadway premiere in 2017.

It won Best New Comedy at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards.

The play starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays; at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays; and at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sundays.

There are no shows on Mondays.

Tickets range from 40,000 won to 70,000 won.

Songdo Moonlight Festival Park, Incheon

Ed Sheeran, who had to cancel a scheduled concert in October after fracturing both of his arms in a bicycle accident, will hold a concert in Incheon’s Songdo International Business District this spring.

He’ll be bringing the unique mix of hip-hop and folk music from his three albums, which continue to perform well on music charts.

The concert starts at 6 p.m.

Tickets range from 110,000 to 132,000 won.
