Hyundai and Kia cars named Top Safety Pick Plus by IIHS

Hyundai Motor Group said Wednesday that 12 of its vehicles have earned the Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States.

The 12 models are the Elantra compact, Sonata midsize sedan, Kona subcompact sport-utility vehicle, Santa Fe SUV, Genesis G70, G80 and G90 released by Hyundai Motor Co., Korea’s top automaker.

The K3 compact, K5 midsize sedan, Niro hybrid, Niro plug-in hybrid, and Sorento SUV by Hyundai’s affiliate, Kia Motors Corp., also received IIHS top safety ratings.

To get a top safety rating from IIHS, a vehicle has to earn high scores in the agency’s small overlap front crash, moderate overlap front crash, side crash, roof strength and head restraint crash tests for both the driver and passenger side, the statement said.

In the initial 2019 model-year rankings, IIHS has given the Top Safety Pick Plus rating to a total of 30 vehicles.
