Discuss the loneliness we feel on the last day of the year”

This is today’s anchor briefing.

“Discuss why we feel lonely and empty inside during the dark moon on the last day in the lunar year.” Just after turning age 40, King Gwanghae asked this question to the scholars who held court with him. King Gwanghae wasn’t an exception to feeling lonely when it is time to say goodbye to the past year… So where does this lonely feeling come from?

Recently, the National Museum of Korea has opened a special historic exhibition called “Goryeo: The Glory of Korea.” The artifacts displayed there tell a story about the wishes of our ancestors, 1,000 years ago. Of the many artifacts, there is a scroll that was retrieved from inside a seated bronze Medicine Buddha Stature at Janggok Temple. The scroll, which was 10 meters long, was crammed with about 1,000 wishes that people back then wrote down for Buddha to see and grant.

“I wish that my two-year-old baby will grow to live a long and healthy life.” There were parents who wished for their children to live long lives. “Please let this girl become a boy.” Even without a clear explanation, we can infer what this ardent wish might have been about. The wishes of over 1,000 people who lived 1,000 years ago in the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) were written down on this scroll. Did all of their wishes come true?

And today… People who dream of a different tomorrow have written down their New Year’s wishes as they say goodbye to 2018. These wishes were things like: “Let me be a home owner,” “Let us take down all high profile figures accused of gapjil, or abuse of power,” “I want to live. If only I had a safety helmet…,” “Until I break the boulder, I will not let go of the eggs in my hand.” The exact written hopes are all different, but what they all stand for similar things. The scroll of wishes from 1,000 years ago, 400 years ago and even from today all indicate what the political and journalistic world should consider.

“Discuss why we feel lonely and empty inside during the dark moon on the last day in the lunar year.”

Lee Myung-han, a scholar who attended the king’s court, replied to this question: “the reason is because we feel sorry that the last of this year’s light is fading away. However, feeling empty and lonely about the passing of time is time wasted in vain… Please do not let this get in your way and devote yourself to the tasks ahead.”

* devote: (…
