"나는 철의 여인인데 왜 구리로 만들었나요?" 철의 여인 마거릿 대처. 그는 언제부터인가 알츠하이머를 앓기 시작해서 대중 앞에서 모습을 감췄습니다. 가족들 몰래 외출을 나갔다가 집안을 발칵 뒤집어놓은 치매 노인. 그의 노년은 영화로도 제작돼서 시선을 모았지요. 질병은 강인함을 무너뜨렸고 가족과 주변인들은 신화가 된 여인을 더는 무너뜨리지 않기 위해서 철저한 은둔생활을 결정했습니다.

“Why make [my statue] out of bronze when I’m an Iron Lady?” These are the words of “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, she disappeared from the public eye, and became just another elderly citizen suffering from Alzheimer’s. She would cause a commotion whenever she went outside without her family knowing. There was so much interest in her elderly life that a movie was made about it. The disease crippled the once strong leader. Thatcher’s colleagues and family members, who thought of Thatcher as a legendary figure, decided to let her live a secluded life away from the public eye.

“I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.” These were the exact words in a letter written by former U.S. President Ronald Regan in 1994. The letter publicized his Alzheimer’s disease, which even Regan couldn’t avoid. However, his way of dealing with the disease was not to seclude himself from the world – but to be public about it. “So now, we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition.” Regan went on to create a foundation and a research institute dedicated to researching Alzheimer’s and to eliminate the social misconceptions about that disease.

Chun Doo Hwan suffers from the same disease as Regan. He, who brushes his teeth 10 times a day, has trouble recalling what just happened and calls himself “The father of democracy.” Chun, however, did not appear at his trial today. The reason was because he has the flu while also suffering from Alzheimer’s.

1995년 12월 3일… 그날은 일요일이었고 저는 그날 아침의 뉴스 진행자였습니다. 동도 트기 전의 시린 새벽에 합천 고향 집에서 안양교도소까지 압송되던 날… 그는 단호하고도 당당했던 얼굴을 내보였습니다. 그 전날의 이른바 골목 성명 후에 고향으로 내려가버린 전직 대통령 전두환… 그때도 그는 당당했죠. 하긴, 전 재산이 29만 원이라고 하던 때도 그는 당당해 보였습니다.

Dec. 3, 1995. It was a Sunday, and I was doing the morning news that day. Chun, who was staying in his hometown of Hapcheon, South Gyeongsang, was taken to the Anyang Prison early in the morning. On his way, he looked bold and self-assured. In the alley in front of his home just a day before, he had announced that he did not do anything wrong and that he did his best for the sake of the country. He then left for his hometown. He looked confident while saying so. Then again, he looked confident when he declared that the only fortune he owned was worth 290,000 won ($257).

차라리 지금도 그렇게 당당하다면 대처의 길도, 레이건의 길도 걷지 못했던 그가 내세운 이유… 알츠하이머란 얼마나 초라한가… 독감이란 얼마나 더 구차한가… 하루에 열 번 넘게 이를 닦는다는 그에게 동정을 보내기에는 우리의 지난 현대사가 너무나 아팠습니다.

Even though he says he’s confident [about his past actions], he refuses to tackle the disease like Thatcher or like Regan. He cited Alzheimer’s and the flu as the reason why he could not appear at his trial. How shabby is the Alzheimer’s excuse… How lame is the flu excuse… The scars that history has left on us are too deep for us to send our sympathies to him, an elderly man who brushes his teeth 10 times a day.
