A responsible ruling party? (KOR)

Rep. Sohn Hye-won declared she was leaving the Democratic Party (DP) in order to not burden the ruling party with the “malicious” attacks on her property holdings in Mokpo, South Jeolla. Her resignation, she claims, does not mean she is admitting to any wrongdoing and she vowed to take criminal action against media outlets trying to sabotage her career with “fake news.” DP floor-leader Hong Young-pyo stood by her at the press conference in a show of the ruling party’s support. The ruling party appears to be oblivious to public sentiment.

Suspicions about the sudden increase in the value of Sohn’s property assets — which jumped after they were recognized as cultural heritage — now becomes law enforcement’s responsibility to clarify. She is accused of illicit insider trading while serving as a member of the National Assembly’s standing committee on culture, sports and tourism, which can wield strong influence over the Cultural Heritage Administration. While on the committee, she purchased buildings and land along streets that later gained state recognition as cultural heritage. The purchases were hastily made under the names of her family members and close acquaintances. The number of assets that came under the ownership of Sohn and those related to her reached 20 in less than a year. How can the ruling party’s leadership explain her gobbling up 20 real estate properties under borrowed names when the government was imposing a crackdown on speculation by levying heavy taxes on property ownership beyond a single home?

The DP attempted to distance itself from controversial lawmakers by having another scandal-ridden member leave their post as a senior executive. Rep. Seo Young-kyo is suspected of calling in a judge to demand a light penalty on a defendant who was a son of her acquaintance. The defendant was accused of sexual harassment against a woman on her way home in 2014. Despite the gravity of the allegations, the party let the issue go without addressing them in a leadership meeting. These actions do not befit a responsible ruling party.

그저 눈 질끈 감아버리는 게 집권당의 자세인가
손혜원 더불어민주당 의원이 20일 기자회견을 열어 탈당 의사를 밝혔다. 이른바 ‘목포 손혜원 타운’과 관련해 부동산 투기 의혹을 인정한다는 취지는 아니었다. 이날 손 의원은 회견에서 자신을 둘러싼 언론보도를 “죽이기‘라고 규정하며, 마치 자신이 가짜뉴스의 피해자인 것처럼 행동했다. 그런 손 의원 옆에 홍영표 원내대표가 호위무사처럼 시종 지키고 서 있었다. 집권당 원내대표가 이례적으로 개인의 탈당 회견에 배석자로 나타난 것은 그런 피해자 코스프레에 힘을 실어주겠다는 것으로밖엔 볼 수 없다. 민심을 생각한다면 안이한 감싸기이자 부적절한 온정주의라고밖에 볼 수 없다.
손 의원 문제는 이제 검찰수사가 불가피한 상황으로 가고 있다. 법적 책임 문제는 지켜보면 될 일이다. 그러나 손 의원의 행위에 대한 논란은 별개 문제다. 그는 문화재청에 영향력을 행사할 수 있는 국회 문화체육관광위원회 여당 간사로 있으면서, 해당 지역이 문화재 거리로 지정되기도 전에 지인과 친인척 명의로 부동산을 집중적으로 매입했다. 그게 무려 20곳에 이른다. 집 두 채를 사도 중과세한다는 마당에 20곳에 친인척과 지인 명으로 부동산을 사들인 걸 국민이 과연 어떻게 받아들이는지, 민주당 지도부는 직시하고 있는지 궁금하다.
손 의원 문제뿐 아니다. 민주당 지도부는 얼마 전 발생한 서영교 의원 문제마저 원내수석부대표 자리에서 자진해서 사퇴하는 것으로 털고 가려 한다. 서 의원은 현직 판사를 의원실로 불러 재판 청탁을 했다는 의혹을 받고 있다. 지난 2014년 9월, 귀가하던 여성 앞에서 바지를 내리고 추행하려 한 지인 아들을 ”벌금형으로 해달라“고 청탁했다고 한다. 사실이라면 심각한 문제이나 당 지도부는 징계 논의조차 할 생각이 없다. 이렇게 소속 의원 문제라면 눈을 질끈 감아버리는 게 집권당의 책임 있는 자세인지 묻고 싶다.
