Taeguk Ladies finish 2nd in China

The Korea women’s national football team returned home Monday after playing a World Cup tuneup event in China.

The women’s team, led by head coach Yoon Deok-yeo, arrived at Incheon International Airport after competing at the four-nation tournament in Meizhou, China. Excluding Ji So-yun and Cho So-hyun, the two players who are with English women’s football league clubs, 23 players landed in their homeland after the 10-day trip.

The Taeguk Ladies finished as the runners-up at the four-nation tournament that featured China, Nigeria and Romania. In the final, Korea lost 1-0 to the hosts China at Wuhua County Olympic Sports Centre in Meizhou Sunday. Gu Yasha scored the match’s only goal in the 15th minute.

Korea previously blanked Romania 3-0 to reach the final.

The four-nation tournament in China was a tuneup event for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup that kicks off in June. Korea is paired with hosts France, Norway and Nigeria in Group A at football’s showpiece competition.

The KFA said the women’s team will assemble again on Feb. 21 to compete in another World Cup tuneup event.

Yoon’s team is scheduled to participate in the Cup of Nations in Australia from Feb. 28 to March 6. Korea will face Argentina on Feb. 28 in Sydney and will take on Australia in Brisbane on March 3. They will wrap up the tournament with New Zealand in Melbourne on March 6.
