‘Self-pleasure report’ reveals that sex toys sell

Jan 23,2019
Until a few years back, sex toys were considered somewhat taboo in Korea, sold in small stores hidden in dark alleyways or behind windows covered with black film to hide the X-rated goods inside.

Survey results published by Japanese sex toy brand Tenga Tuesday showed that this shady perception has begun to change as one out of every 10 Koreans said to have masturbated with a sex toy at some point.

The company ran surveys in 18 countries, Korea included, last year to compile a “Self-pleasure report.” More than 1,000 respondents replied from Korea.

In Tuesday’s report, 14 percent of Korean participants said they had experienced masturbation using a sex toy. This was 4 percentage points lower than the global average. In another set of survey results released last year, 96 percent of Korean men said they have masturbated before, whereas 56 percent of female recipients said they had. Both reports used the same pool of respondents.

Survey results showed that the level of satisfaction for masturbation was higher among people who used toys compared to those who didn’t. Sixty-nine percent of sex toy users said their satisfaction from masturbation was high, while a smaller 59 percent among non-users replied the same.

At the same time, the report proved Koreans were not completely ready to be explicit about their use of sex toys. Asked whether they would consider telling people about their experience with sex toys in the future, 26 percent said they would - 18 percentage points lower compared to the global average.

However, responses showed a significant gap according to age, implying that millennials are leading the perception change.

Korea topped the list on seeing sex toys as something for both men and women. Seventy-eight percent of survey respondents said toys were for both sexes.
