Gov’t strengthens rules for vehicle safety inspections

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is strengthening regulations for its vehicle safety test - the Korea New Car Assessment Program (Kncap) - to improve its fairness and safety standards.

According to the ministry’s regulation amendment for the program, vehicles tested will be randomly chosen instead of the current method that relies on vehicles provided by manufacturers. The vehicles will be selected from those that are being sold to ordinary consumers at random.

New safety standard changes will also evaluate second-row seats in forward collision tests.

Collision tests will also have more categories for penalties. Whichever scores worst between the driver’s seat and passenger’s seat will be used for calculation.

The ministry said the changes will strengthen safety levels to international standards.

Kncap tests new cars every year and offers awards.
