SM signs deal with Tencent Music

SM Entertainment joined forces with China’s leading music and entertainment company, Tencent Music Entertainment, on Wednesday.

The two companies signed a contract making Tencent Music Entertainment the local distribution partner for SM Entertainment’s artists and content, giving them access to various platforms in China.

The music agency previously had the distribution contract with Alibaba that started in February 2016, which is set to expire in the near future.

“This partnership with China’s biggest online music and entertainment platform is very meaningful in a time where our company’s global sales are rising,” said SM’s director Han Se-min.

“We will be pushing forward various marketing and distribution strategies to make sure that our music, music videos and [other] content get out there into the Chinese market. This will include diverse collaboration businesses, including those online. We hope to see our music sales rise in China starting this year,” said Han.

Tencent Music is a leader in China’s online music and entertainment market, servicing various content on the web.

The company owns four of the biggest mobile music services in China: QQ Music, KuGuo Music, Kuwo Music and WeSing, with the total number of users surpassing 800 million.
