테스트

뉴스룸의 앵커브리핑을 시작하겠습니다.

This is today’s anchor briefing.

어느 빌딩 앞 화단에 붙어있는 문구에 오래 시선을 두었습니다. "비밀의 정원. 들어가지 마세요." 관리인은 화단을 가로질러 걸어 다니는 사람들 때문에 골치가 좀 아팠던 모양입니다.

A phrase written in the flowerbed in front of the building caught the attention of many. “Secret garden. Please do not enter.” The janitor must have had a pretty bad headache because of all of the people who trespassed through his flowers.

*phrase: 구절, 문구 *flowerbed: 화단, 꽃밭 *janitor: 관리인 *trespass: 무단 침입[출입]하다

마음 같아선 '출입금지' 표지판을 붙이고 싶었겠으나 그는 다른 방법을 생각해냈고 사람들은 기분 좋은 미소를 지으며 그 앞을 지나갔습니다.

He could have posted a sign that said “Off limits,” but he found another way and people passed by the sign with a smile on their faces.

*off limits: 출입금지

"지금 들어오는 열차!! 여기서 뛰어도 못 탑니다. 제가 해봤어요." 경사로가 심한 지하철 환승 엘리베이터에서 마음 급한 이들은 그 재치 있는 문구를 들여다보면서 조급함을 달랬겠지요.

“The train is arriving! Running isn’t going to help you get on that train. Believe me, I’ve tried.” People in a rush were put at ease as they saw this witty sign while waiting the elevator near a steep sloped subway transfer station.

*be at ease: 안심하다, 마음을 놓다 *witty: 재치있는 *steep sloped: 경사가 급한 *transfer: 환승

부정의 문구가 아닌 웃음 섞인 아이디어는 오히려 사람의 마음을 움직였고 자그마한 변화를 불러왔다는 이야기입니다. '아'가 다르고 '어'가 다르다는 말이 있듯이 이처럼 사람의 말이란 참 오묘한 것이어서 어떤 말은 사람의 마음을 녹이고 보듬지만, 어떤 말은 사람을 할퀴고 무너뜨리기도 하니…

This is an example of how instead of being negative, an idea full of wit touches peoples’ hearts and brings about change. There is a traditional Korean saying, “Even phrases with the same meaning differ depending on how you say it.” Likewise, while some words melt people’s hearts, others can leave scars and tear them down.

*negative: 부정적인, 비관적인 *tear down: 무너뜨리다

내가 타인에게 건네는 말은 어떠한가… 그리고 타인이 나에게 돌려주는 말은 또 어떠한가… 지난 명절에 등장한 '명절 잔소리 메뉴판'이라는 것이 있었습니다. '살 좀 빼야겠다' 잔소리하려면 10만 원. '아이는 언제 가질 거냐' 물어보려면 50만원.

How are my words passed on to others? And what about the words that others pass on to me? Last holiday, a new concept called the “holiday nitpicking menu” emerged. Telling people that they “need to lose weight” cost 100,000 won ($89). Asking “When are you planning to have a baby?” required 500,000 won.

The items on the menu were things that people were sick of being asked about during the holiday season and were added to the list in jest. But because of the thoughtless words people say to each other, people are starting to hate and avoid holiday gatherings.

*avoid: 피하다

말에 대한 이야기가 나온 김에 설날이란 말의 어원을 찾아봤습니다. 여러 가지 어원이 있으나 설날은 처음 맞이하는 '낯선 날'이라는 의미… 나이를 한 살 더 먹어서 '서러운 날'이라는 의미…

I’ve looked up the origin of the word Seollal (traditional Korean Lunar New Year). There are numerous origins to this word, but the meaning that defines Seollal as “a new, unfamiliar day.” A meaning that says Seollal is a “day of sorrow” because you get one year older.

*origin: 어원, 기원 *unfamiliar: 낯선 *sorrow: 서러움

풀이대로라면, 설날이란 모두가 조금은 낯설고도 사뭇 서럽게 맞이하는 첫 번째 새날일 터인데 그 조심스러운 정초부터 부디 말로 서로 상처 주지 마시길… 앞서 소개해드린 명절 잔소리 메뉴판의 맨 아래에는 다음과 같은 문구가 쓰여 있습니다.

According to the original meaning of Seollal, it is a new day in which everyone feels just a little bit more sorrowful and strange – why make it even harder by hurting each other with careless words? There was a phrase written at the very bottom of the “holiday nitpicking menu” that I talked about earlier.

"걱정하는 마음은 유료로 판매하고 있으니, 구입 후에 이용해주시면 감사하겠습니다"

“Your concerns for me come at a cost, so please let me know your worries about me after making a purchase.”

*concern: 걱정, 근심

오늘의 앵커브리핑이었습니다.

That is all for today’s anchor briefing.
