[ICONIC FOOD] Movie puts galbi chicken on the menu: After its starring role in the hit ‘Extreme Job,’ people are clamoring for a taste
A surprise success at the box office, the movie kicked off a national craving for the fictional chicken dish, known in the film as Suwon Wang Galbi Tongdak. In the movie, even the officers have a hard time remembering the original purpose of running the restaurant because their chicken sells so well. After one officer whose family runs a Korean barbecue restaurant in Suwon, Gyeonggi, gets his hands on the recipe, it instantly becomes a hit on social media for its unique taste and people from across the nation flock to try it out.
Some chicken restaurants did not miss the chance to try out the new style of chicken themselves to attract new groups of customers, especially eateries in Suwon. The city’s famous Chicken Street is known to have more than a dozen chicken restaurants and is a must-see location for many visitors. Many restaurants in the area have introduced their own versions of the marinated fried chicken, and one has even brought back an updated version of barbecue sauce chicken that it introduced two years ago that didn’t prove to be very popular at first.
Some franchise chicken eateries that sell chicken made with barbecue sauce have reportedly seen an increase in sales recently. Goobne Chicken, which released its Galbi Cheonwang in 2016, has seen a nearly 20-percent sales increase for their menu item since the movie opened. BHC’s Galbi Leo has been sought after by those looking to be trendy. The dishes from both restaurants include galbi sauce covering their chicken, but the chicken is grilled, not fried.
For people looking to try the chicken from the film at home, CJ Entertainment released the recipe they used to make the chicken on social media. Check out the recipe below.
Those looking to try to “real” thing don’t have to wait much longer because the galbi chicken used in the film is coming to town this week. Lusso Factory, the catering company that cooked the chicken used in the movie in a food truck near the set, will be selling its version starting on Feb. 20 in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. To create a more authentic ambiance, the company decided to sell the chicken from a food truck - the same way it did for the movie. The chicken will be available in the parking lot of the restaurant Road Camping, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. To make the marinade for a whole chicken, you need:
300 (4.2 cups) milliliters of soy sauce
260 grams (1.3 cups) of sugar
10 grams of pepper
15 milliliters of starch syrup
30 milliliters of cooking oil
20 milliliters of sesame oil
13 grams of chili seasonings
175 grams of minced onion
75 grams of peeled garlic
125 grams of cola
5 grams of Miwon (a food additive).
Cuts of the chicken need to sit in 200 milliliters of milk for 30 minutes first. Next, remove the chicken from the milk. Combine 1.5 cups of frying powder and 1.5 cups of water. Cover the chicken in the mixture and then put it into oil to fry. After frying, put the marinade in a pan along with the fried chicken and stir-fry for about three minutes until the marinade covers the chicken.
