DSME wins patent suit in Japan over PRS technology

Mar 12,2019
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) said Monday that it won a patent lawsuit in Japan over technology in its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier ships.

The shipbuilder had been in a patent dispute with a Japanese competitor over its LNG partial re-liquefaction system (PRS), which allows ships to prevent LNG from evaporating.

DSME said the court sided with the Korean shipbuilder and that Japanese ships using the technology - and also vessels equipped with the system that enter Japan - will be violating DSME’s patent.

The legal victory follows two other disputes over the PRS, which DSME also won.

“PRS is registered as a patent in around 10 countries overseas and the recent confirmation of the patent’s validity in Japan will lead to maintaining a competitive advantage for LNG carrier orders,” said a press officer for DSME.

The shipbuilder has registered the patent in Korea, the United States, Europe, Japan, China and India.
