Planning a trip to visit unique buildings can be a lot of fun. Visitors can stroll through the buildings, take pictures and even learn the history of new places. Gyeonggi - the province that surrounds Seoul - is home to many distinct, traditional and modern structures that are worth a visit.

The following are four sites that the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization recommends visitors check out.

테스트

1. Ye’s Park, Icheon Ceramics Village

Icheon was the center of baekja (white porcelain) production during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Icheon’s unique location and geography attracted many professional potters around the country - not only was the area located near Hanyang, then the capital city of Joseon, it was also rich in natural resources and supplies.

Ye’s Park, a ceramics village located in Icheon, is home to many beautiful and artistic buildings. These structures are really the reason people should visit the park. Tradition is preserved in the modern buildings, creating an interesting mix of both new and old. The Cera Guitar Cultural Center, a giant guitar-shaped structure, is the hottest destination for those looking to share something unique on social media. The center provides guitar classes and ukulele-making workshops during the week.

There are about 150 workrooms across Ye’s Park, where young and old artists make pottery, furniture, paper crafts and leatherworks. The artists also hold exhibits, workshops and markets.

2. Pangyo Techno Valley

The Pangyo Techno Valley, a giant research and development complex located in Pangyo-dong, Seongnam, is filled with tech companies like Hanwha Techwin and NHN. It’s a hub of art and innovative technology.

Stepping out of Pangyo Station feels like you’re walking into the future. A long passageway connecting Alphadom Tower 3 and Krafton Tower immediately attracts passersby’s attention. The passageway resembles a long spaceship.

The Gaenari Bridge near the station is also a unique feature. Characterized by a tall, tower-shaped structure and a crooked path, the bridge provides a connection from the station to the valley. Make sure to have fun spotting the logos of each business on the buildings.

3. Chang Ucchin Museum of Art, Yangju

Chang Ucchin (1917-90) is Korea’s best known modern painter, along with Park Soo-keun, Lee Jung-seob and Kim Whanki. The museum, located in Yangju, was established to commemorate Chang’s works and his freewheeling spirit, as well as to promote modern Korean art. The museum, located on a small hill, is a very simple, white building, reflecting his pursuit of ultimate simplicity. The building, which was designed based on his paintings and his own home, is composed of three storeys with several rooms, all facing in different directions, offering a variety of views of the surrounding landscape. Once you’re inside, the plain white walls inside the building create a dreamlike effect. In 2014, it was awarded the Kim Swoo Geun Prize - named after the prominent Korean modern architect Kim Swoo-geun.

4. The Holy Land of St. Kim Dae-kun

Deep in the valleys of Yongin lies The Holy Land of St. Kim Dae-kun - also known as the Euni Sanctuary - a hidden site surrounded by mountains. The place looks small and common, but it is actually a site with a huge religious significance in the history of Catholicism. It’s the very place where the Korean Catholic priest Kim Dae-kun (1821-46) - known as Saint Andrew Kim Dae-kun - was baptized. It was also where he hid during the time when Catholicism was prohibited in a strictly Confucian society.

In the center of the holy space sits the Kim Ka-hang Cathedral.

The front wall of the cathedral is shaped like a pentagon and has the word “sanctuary” written in Chinese, right below the cross on its roof. The cathedral was built to resemble one that existed in Shanghai in the 19th century.

Right before the cathedral was to be torn down by the Chinese government, Kim brought it over to Korea with the help of the Shanghai parish. The cathedral was officially consecrated in 2016, celebrating the 170th anniversary of Kim’s baptism.

In 2018, the cathedral was also appointed a cultural asset of Gyeonggi and received the 23rd Gyeonggi Province Architecture Prize for its simple, yet elegant structure, reflecting Kim’s actual lifestyle. Next to the cathedral lies the priest’s office and a memorial hall for Kim, which resembles a hanok (Korean traditional house).
