The old man of Wanna One reflects: Yoon misses the band, but enjoys going solo and does not miss the online hecklers

[ILGAN SPORTS]

Becoming famous was definitely no piece of cake for Yoon Ji-sung. Having debuted as part of 11-member act Wanna One after making it through to the finals of Mnet’s “Produce 101,” he saw his dream come true in his late 20s, which is considered quite old in the K-pop industry. When at last he held the flowers of his life-long ambition in his hands, little did he know that the thorns would give him pain he never imagined.

For Yoon, becoming a celebrity wasn’t just something he thought about in teenage daydreams. He graduated from the National High School of Traditional Korean Arts and majored in stage performance in university, practicing every day for his chance to be in the spotlight. He had to spend seven years living in a tiny one-room apartment as a trainee, but he finally got his chance with “Produce 101.”

As the oldest of the group, Yoon spent a year and a half as Wanna One’s leader. He was known for being the liveliest of the 11, which won him both love from his fans and criticism from those who thought that he was overreacting; some vicious comments left him with a wounded heart.

“Those were such hard times, but at the same time such precious memories that will never come back,” said Yoon.

Having made his official solo debut in February, he is currently cast in a musical titled “The Days,” which is likely to be his last professional engagement before he begins his mandatory military service. Yoon sat down with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. Following are edited excerpts of the interview.

Q. You wasted no time debuting your solo career after Wanna One disbanded in December. How do you keep in shape?

A
. I try to stay fit because I shouldn’t gain weight. I take personal training sessions, but I recently lost all my muscle while preparing for my album. I’m a little bit sad because my role as Gang Mu-yeong in the play “The Days” is that of an armed guard at the Blue House, which would have been better if I’d kept up my muscular body.

What kind of a character did you think Gang Mu-yeong was?

I think he’s a witty guy with a free soul, but not the kind of person who’s always happy and positive. Everyone has scars, so I tried to look at his situation from different angles, thinking about what his wounds might be. I came to the conclusion that Gang Mu-yeong is a fantastic character - I couldn’t believe he was so perfect.

But were you able to relate to him nevertheless?

I think we were similar in that we can both hide our sorrows and console others, thinking about other people’s emotions first.

Was that the case when you were the leader of Wanna One?

I did have to think a lot about the members and the on-site staff. I was in a position where I couldn’t just think about myself.

What would you say are the ups and downs of being in a group versus being solo?

I think being alone itself has both positive and negative aspects, as does being in a group. When I was a member of Wanna One, I enjoyed the fact that we could order a variety of foods. But as a solo act, I like that practice only takes an hour.

Are you stressed these days?

I actually worry a lot and have a very low self-esteem. Every day I think to myself, ‘What am I going to do?’ only to forget my answer the next minute. I end up telling myself, ‘Well, this is just the way it’s going to be.’ I get stressed but soon forget. I might sound like an old man, but I think I’m the way I am because it’s worked until now. Saying, ‘This is just the way it is and I was born this way,’ makes me feel more relaxed.

So you’re not exactly that optimistic?

I try to think that way, even with the bad things, that this is the way it is because it is the only way it can be - but that’s also true of good things. I try to do my best with what I can do, but other than that, it’s inevitable. I had huge mood swings when I was younger, but I discovered that it didn’t help me at all. I realized that I was only damaging myself. That’s when I started to just face things as they are.

What was it like being a member of Wanna One?

I seriously can’t remember. Whole months of my memory are gone because they were so hectic. I only got to sleep an hour or two every day, with four events each day, and I was just so exhausted. It’s actually quite similar these days. Between the musical, recording, filming, performance and practice, there are just so many things I need to do. But I try to care more about each event because I have to bear it on my own.

Were there hardships you couldn’t overcome?

I got a lot of vicious comments from the beginning of my time with Wanna One. Being only human, I saw them and at first I lost a lot of confidence, thinking, ‘People are saying all this because I deserve it.’ I care a lot about what others think, which made me cower more. I even tried to stay away from the other members because I didn’t want to damage them. But the members trusted me and stuck by me.

It must have been so difficult for you, seeing all those bad comments.

I was scared of people - I even suffered from panic attacks. I was waiting to perform overseas, and my hands began shaking so badly. I couldn’t tell the other members, but I locked the doors as soon as I got to the hotel and threw up. I was shaking so badly that there was no scene [in the video of the performance] where they took me on my own. I couldn’t even sleep some days, but it’s not so bad - we are reporting internet trolls to the police.

Was it always your dream to become a celebrity?

I wanted to be a star on TV. I really liked Fin.K.L., especially Lee Hyori. I even joined this agency to see Hyori. One time, I ran into her when I was a trainee, and she told me to ‘drop by at Jeju Island.’ It was such an honor. I consider myself a successful fan.

How does it feel now that you’ve actually become a star?

A lot of things changed so suddenly. I really couldn’t believe it. A lot of things changed around me, and they fascinate me. Wanna One received so much love and popularity in such a short amount of time, so I think I’m going to need more time to take it all in. But it’s so shocking every time, when someone tells me, “I’m a fan, Yoon Ji-sung.”

Would you, given the same chance, contend at the “Produce 101” series again?

No. I made my debut through it, but I definitely couldn’t do it again - it was just so hard, both physically and mentally. I was never the type of person who does well in competitions. I can’t stand that atmosphere where people fight over something.
