Yum Jung-ah switches it up: ‘Another Child’ has the ‘SKY Castle’ star playing a deeply emotional role

Yum hopes to win over audiences with her acting, but in a different style than before. She sat down with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to discuss her character in depth and how she has been doing since the end of the popular JTBC drama, “SKY Castle.” The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

A. It is different in a way because Kim’s directing style is more straight-forward and meticulous than other directors [because he is an actor himself]. He knew what I lacked, and explained it to me in a way I could sympathize with very well. He even pointed out details that I missed.
What is Kim’s directing style like?
He speaks very quietly to the actors so that the rest of the cast cannot hear him. But he doesn’t beat around the bush and speaks directly about how I’m acting, like he is playing the part himself. So it’s very easy to understand his intentions. At first, I was embarrassed about how candid he was but later I felt that his way made it much easier for me to act because I could comprehend his directions perfectly.
In what ways did you feel Kim’s thoroughness?
I was actually feeling a lot of pressure for the part because Kim repeatedly said ‘acting is the most crucial [part of this film].’ So naturally I was worried about misunderstanding the director’s intentions and messing it up. Yet my doubts dissolved immediately as soon as I arrived on set because Kim was so trustworthy. I worked happily under his guidance.
For instance, there was a scene where my daughter Juri goes out to search for her father. But when she finds him, he runs away. So she comes back to my car saying, ‘Dad ran away.’ At that moment, Kim zooms the camera right up to my face. I was trying out different reactions to Juri’s words, then Kim suggested, ‘Why don’t you try smirking a bit?’ And I thought to myself, ‘Why haven’t I thought of that before? Yes, Young-ju could definitely respond that way, that makes sense.’ It was a simple scene, but I could immediately see what Kim was trying to depict through his suggestion.
Even with Kim’s pointers, did you have any difficulties with your character?
Yes, because Young-ju’s emotions were very complex. She is very proud, but she loses momentum as soon as she finds out about her husband’s affair. Even after she finds out about his secret, she struggles to regain composure and just accept this weight to minimize the impact it will have on her teenage daughter, who is already in the midst of puberty. Because she is a mother, she does not lash out or express her rage and sadness. Instead, she attempts to hold all of those emotions inside her mind. Although I sympathized with my character because I am a mother myself, it was very, very difficult to play someone holding in her feelings like that. [The acting] suffocated me like it did to the character.
Could you say that because you played such a repressed character beforehand you were able to really explode in your next work, which happened to be ‘SKY Castle?’
(laughs) You can look at it that way. The two mothers were as different as night and day. I guess the emotions that I had pent up and my passion for acting came out like fireworks in that drama. I admit that I let it all out on set.
After ‘SKY Castle,’ the number of fans you have seems to be skyrocketing, almost to the level of a pop star. Can you feel the difference too?
I do think I have been receiving a lot of positive energy from my fans, but I haven’t yet quite adjusted [to my sudden increase in popularity]. But I can definitely feel the difference when I attend previews. Before the drama, I usually saw fans following around male counterparts, but now I see placards with my name on them too. I even saw video footage of me filmed by my fans floating around in internet. I was stunned and amazed when I saw all those things happening.
How do your children feel [about your popularity]?
The kids don’t realize it that much. When the drama was airing, they did get a lot of autographs from me for their friends, but other than that, I don’t think they are aware of it.

'미성년' 염정아 "김윤석 감독 쪽집게 디렉팅, 행복했다."
염정아가 김윤석 감독과 호흡맞춘 소감을 전했다.
영화 '미성년(김윤석 감독)' 개봉을 앞두고 있는 염정아는 3일 서울 삼청동의 한 카페에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 "김윤석 감독님은 연기를 하는 분이니까, 연기의 디테일을 설명하는 것이 다른 감독들과는 다르더라. 진짜 '쏙쏙' 와 닿게 설명해 주셨고, 내가 뭐가 부족한지를 너무 잘 알고 계시더라. 내가 놓치는 부분을 다 캐치 하셨다"고 회상했다.
염정아는 "사실 역할에 부담이 있었다. 감독님이 처음부터 '연기가 중요한 영화다'는 말씀을 하셨기 때문에, 내가 연기를 잘 못하고 잘못 짚어서 '영화에 누가 되면 어떡하나' 싶었다. 근데 현장에서 감독님 자체가 너무 믿음직스러웠기 때문에 행복하게 믿고 따랐다"고 전했다.
"어떤 장면에서 감독의 섬세함을 느꼈냐"고 묻자 염정아는 "주리가 아빠 찾으러 가는데 아빠가 도망간다. '아빠 도망갔어' 하면서 내 차에 타 돌아가는 신이 있다. 그때 감독님이 내 얼굴에 카메라를 대고 계셨다. 혼자 이것저것 연기를 했는데 감독님이 '한번 픽 하고 웃어볼까요?'라고 하시더라. '어머, 난 왜 그 생각을 못 했지? 그렇겠구나. 그럴 수 있겠구나' 싶었다. 정말 간단한 컷인데도 확 와 닿았다"고 설명했다.
"김윤석은 감독은 어떤 방식으로 디렉팅을 하냐"는 질문에는 "다른 분들이 듣지 못하게 조용한 소리로 작게 이야기 한다. 대신 돌려 말씀 안 하시고 '지금 이런 기분에 이렇게 연기 하시죠?'라고 꼭 집는다. 마치 감독님이 연기하는 것처럼 알아듣기 쉽다. 처음엔 부끄러웠는데나중에는 그게 저렇게 직접적으로 이야기 해 주시니까 금방 알아 듣겠더라. 진짜 좋았다"고 덧붙였다.
최근 JTBC 'SKY 캐슬'과 영화 '완벽한 타인' 등에서 강렬한 인상을 남기며 팬들의 사랑을 한 몸에 받고 있는 염정아는 '미성년'에서 남편 대원(김윤석)의 비밀을 알고도 담담한 영주를 연기했다.
영주는 비밀을 알게 된 후에도 딸 주리(김혜준)가 상처받지 않도록 애써 담담한 척 하는 인물. 염정아는 대원을 향한 미움과 배신감마저도 속으로 감내하며 감정을 겉으로 드러내지 않는 모습을 절제된 내면 연기력으로 소화해 관객들에게 더욱 깊이 있는 공감을 불러일으킬 예정이다.
'미성년'은 평온했던 일상을 뒤흔든 폭풍 같은 사건을 마주한 두 가족의 이야기를 그린 작품이다. 배우 김윤석의 첫 감독 데뷔작으로 11일 개봉한다.
염정아가 '미성년'과 '스카이캐슬'의 극과 극 캐릭터에 대해 언급했다.

염정아는 "무너지지 않으려고, 담담하게 받아 들이려고 애쓰는 여자이고, 내가 잘못을 참고 잡아야만 사춘기에 있는 내 딸이, 입시를 앞두고 있는 내 딸이 흔들리지 않을 것 같았기 때문에 그 마음을 밖으로 드러내지 않으려 노력했다"고 말했다.
이어 "마지막에 미희를 찾아가는 것도 비슷한 마음이다. 매 신 너무 너무 뭔가를 하고 싶었는데 내지를 수 없어서 답답하기도 했다. 그럴 수 없는 그 엄마 마음이 너무 이해가 가기도 했다"고 덧붙였다.
"답답함을 어떻게 해소했냐"는 질문에는 "사실 따로 해소 할 수 있는 방법은 없었다. 다만 온갖 부담감과 고민을 이만큼 현장에 가져가면 어떻게든 감독님이 해결을 해 주셨다. 돌아올 땐 늘 가벼운 마음이었다"고 김윤석의 연출력에 거듭 존경을 표했다.
"'미성년'에서 워낙 절제하는 캐릭터라 촬영 순서로는 그 다음 작품이었던 'SKY캐슬'에서 터뜨린 것 아니냐"고 묻자 호탕하게 웃은 염정아는 "그럴 수도 있다. 너무 다른 인물이었다. 아마 '미성년'을 하면서 '연기 잘하고 싶어!'라고 쌓아놨던 것들을 'SKY캐슬'에서 다 풀어내지 않았나 생각한다"고 밝혔다.

영화 '미성년(김윤석 감독)' 개봉을 앞두고 있는 염정아는 3일 서울 삼청동의 한 카페에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 "몇 번째 전성기일지 모를 정도로 늘 자신의 자리를 지켰지만, 드라마 'SKY캐슬' 이후 직캠이 등장할 정도로 아이돌급 팬덤을 이끌고 있다"는 말에 "전성기 그런 것은 모르겠고 부담도 없다. 기분 좋다"고 진심을 표했다.
염정아는 "갑자기 좋아해 주시는 분들이 많아지니까 그 에너지도 받는 것 같다. 근데 사실 아직도 적응이 안 된다. 시사회나 내 영화를 선보이는 자리에 가면 늘 옆에 있는 남자 배우들을 따라다니던 팬들만 봤다. 근데 플랜카드에 내 이름이 쓰여져 있으니까 '저게 뭐지? 하면서 보고 있다"고 전해 웃음을 자아냈다.
"플랜카드 문구 중 기억에 남는 것이 있냐"고 묻자 염정아는 "그냥 '염.정.아'라고 크게 쓰고 다니시더라"고 귀띔해 특별한 수식어 없아 존재만으로도 강렬한 염정아임을 확인케 했다.
"자녀들의 반응은 어떻냐"고 하자 "애들은 잘 모른다. 'SKY캐슬'이 방송될 때 사인은 많이 받아 갔다"며 "그것 외에 애기들은 잘 모르는 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.
