노회찬. 한 사람에 대해, 그것도 그의 사후에… 세 번의 앵커브리핑을 하게 될 줄은 몰랐습니다.
Roh Hoe-chan. I never expected I would give three anchor briefings for one person, especially after his death.
사실 오늘의 앵커브리핑은 이보다 며칠 전에 그의 죽음에 대한 누군가의 발언이 논란이 되었을 때 했어야 했으나 당시는 선거전이 한창이었고, 저의 앵커브리핑이 선거전에 연루되는 것을 피해야 했으므로 선거가 끝난 오늘에야 내놓게 되었음을 먼저 말씀드립니다.
Beforehand, I should tell you that this anchor briefing should have been done earlier when a former Seoul mayor’s remark created a controversy. To avoid getting involved in the election, we held this segment until today, well after the election.

제가 학교에서 몇 푼 거리 안 되는 지식을 팔고 있던 시절에 저는 그를 두 어 번 저의 수업 시간에 초대했습니다. 솔직히 말씀드리자면 처음에는 저도 요령을 부리느라 그를 불러 저의 하루 치 수업 준비에 들어가는 노동을 줄여보겠다는 심산도 없지 않았지요.
When I was giving lectures in university with my trivial knowledge, I invited him a few times to my class. To tell you the truth, I invited him to reduce my workload in preparing for my classes.

저의 얕은 생각을 몰랐을 리 없었겠지만, 그는 그 바쁜 와중에도 아주 흔쾌히 응해주었습니다. 다음 해, 또 그다음 해까지 그는 저의 강의실을 찾아주었지요. 그때마다 제가 그를 학생들에게 소개할 때 했던 말이 있습니다. 노 의원은 앞과 뒤가 같은 사람이고, 처음과 끝이 같은 사람이다… 그것은 진심이었습니다.
He must have seen through my intentions, but he still willingly accepted my invitation, even with his busy schedule. He continued visiting my classroom the next year and the year after that. Each time, I would say a certain phrase when I introduced him. Representative Roh is a person who is the same inside and out, and also from start to finish… I sincerely believe that.

제가 그를 속속들이 알 수는 없는 일이었지만, 정치인 노회찬은 노동운동가 노회찬과 같은 사람이었고, 또한 정치인 노회찬은 휴머니스트로서의, 자연인 노회찬과도 같은 사람이었습니다.
There is no way that I can know everything about him, but the politician Roh Hoe-chan was the same person as the labor leader Roh Hoe-chan, and the politician Roh Hoe-chan was a humanist, who was the same as the free spirit Roh Hoe-chan.

그러나 그것은 어찌 보면 인연이라기보다는 그저 우연에 가까운 일이었을 터이고… 그런 몇 가지의 일화들을 엮어내는 것만으로 그가 가졌던 현실정치의 고민마저 다 알아채고 있었다 할 수는 없을 것입니다.
However, these instances were closer to chance than fate… And connecting a few anecdotes cannot represent all of his realpolitik concerns.

그래서 그의 놀라운 죽음 직후에 제가 알고 있던 노회찬이란 사람을 어떻게 규정할 수 있는가를 한동안 고심했고, 그 답을 희미하게 찾아내 가다가… 결국은 또 다른 세파에 떠밀려 그만 잊어버리고 있던 차에… 논란이 된 그 발언은 나왔습니다.
That is why, after his surprising death, I pondered how to define Roh Hoe-chan as a person, and was somewhat able to find a solution… But, this was forgotten through the vicissitudes of life… and came back to light because of the remark that caused controversy.

거리낌없이 던져놓은 그 말은 파문에 파문을 낳았지만 역설적이게도 바로 그 순간에 그 덕분에 한동안 잊고 지냈던 노회찬에 대한 규정, 혹은 재인식을 생각해냈던 것입니다. 즉, 노회찬은 '돈 받고 스스로 목숨을 끊은 사람'이 아니라 적어도 '돈 받은 사실이 끝내 부끄러워 목숨마저 버린 사람'이라는 것…
The bold remark spurred controversy, but ironically, thanks to it, I conceived an idea to use this opportunity to define how people portrayed the forgotten Roh Hoe-chan and see him in a new light. Thus, instead of thinking of him as “a person who committed suicide after receiving money,” we can say that he was “a person who was so ashamed of himself for receiving money that he killed himself…”

그보다 비교할 수 없이 더 큰 비리를 지닌 사람들의 행태를 떠올린다면… 우리는 세상을 등진 그의 행위를 미화할 수는 없지만… 그가 가졌던 부끄러움은 존중해줄 수 있다는 것…
If we think of the behavior of people who committed far worse crimes of corruption than Roh… We cannot justify his actions that made him part with this world… But it allows us to respect that he was ashamed of his actions…
이것이 그에 대한 평가에서 가장 중요한 것을 빼버린 그 차디찬 일갈을 듣고 난 뒤 마침내 도달하게 된 저의 결론이었습니다. 그렇게 해서 저의 동갑내기 노회찬에게 이제야 비로소 작별을 고하려 합니다.
This is my conclusion after hearing the harsh remarks which omitted the most important thing about him in their evaluation. With this, I would like to finally say goodbye to my friend Roh Hoe-chan.
