KT connects with Kakao Mobility

With its connected-car platform, KT will work with Kakao Mobility to develop smart-mobility services, KT announced in a statement Monday.

Based on the partnership, the two companies plan to cooperate on developing smarter mobility experiences from navigation to chauffeur services and a service that helps drivers find a parking spot through GiGA Drive, KT’s connected-car platform service, and Kakao Mobility’s Kakao T, a taxi-hailing app that also offers other mobility-related services.

The cooperation will allow the connecting Kakao T to link directly GiGA Drive, which is similar to Google Android Auto. This, for example, will allow a driver to call a chauffeur after drinking heavily or help a driver find a parking spot without picking up a phone.

KT and Kakao Mobility are also reviewing methods of connecting Kakao T services to KT’s 5G-based autonomous vehicle and vehicle technical management systems.

KT offers connected-car platform services to 14 companies and controls 46 percent of the connected-car market in Korea, according to a January report from the Ministry of Science and ICT. Approximately 1.86 million connected vehicles are operating in the country.

“We expect Kakao T, which has secured the most B2C subscribers, to be able to fulfill the needs of KT’s connected car platform users through its broad range of services,” said a spokesperson for KT. “We’ll put in the effort to foster the ecosystem of the mobility industry through continuous cooperation.”

Kakao T offers its services to 22 million users.
