North’s women’s youth team to join tournament in South
North Korea will send its national youth women’s football team across the border for a summer tournament, South Korean organizers said Tuesday. The city of Goyang, west of Seoul, said it will host a four-nation, under-18 women’s competition featuring the two Koreas, China and Japan. The event is tentatively scheduled for July 8-15 at Goyang Stadium.
Goyang officials said the South Korean team will consist of players from 14 high schools. North Korea will mostly have players that competed at last year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Japan and China have informed the organizers that they’ll try to send the best players available.
Goyang Mayor Lee Jae-jun said the tournament is part of important inter-Korean cooperation and will help usher in peace on the peninsula.
Last fall, Chuncheon and Inje, in the eastern part of South Korea, in Gangwon, hosted the fifth edition of the Ari Sports Cup, an under-15 youth football tournament pitting the Koreas against each other.
