Celebs honor Sewol anniversary

Condolences swept the internet on Tuesday, with pictures from celebrities who shared messages honoring the fifth anniversary of the sinking of Sewol ferry on April 16, 2014.

Koreans have used the symbol of the yellow ribbon to represent the incident, in which 304 people died or went missing.

Actor Jung Woo-sung posted a picture on Instagram of multiple yellow paper ships forming a bigger ship, with the numbers 416 written in the middle.

Actors Yoon Se-a and Yoon So-young also posted yellow symbols with the words “I will remember, I will not forget.”

Actor Gong Seung-yeon joined in the commemoration by posting a picture of a yellow ribbon with the caption, “I will not forget the fifth anniversary of the Sewol incident.”

Comedian and writer Yoo Byung-jae posted a picture of his arm wearing a yellow bracelet, with the words “All together.”

Singer Lee Seung-hwan chastised those who claim that there are political intentions behind the mourning.

There were some who have criticized others for “still lamenting” the victims, saying that they must be politically progressive because the incident took place when conservative President Park Geun-hye was still in office.

However, Lee took issue with the sentiment, saying that remembering what happened and finding the truth was about humanity.

“How can you think of the incident as tiresome?” he wrote. “I am revolted by your thoughts. I sincerely wish for the truth to be revealed sometime soon for the sake of the lives that were sacrificed and the remaining families. And I wish to see that justice is alive in this country by seeing those who are responsible for the tragedy rightfully pay for their deeds.”
