Nat’l volleyball coach to be punished for pro job hunt

Korean men’s volleyball head coach Kim Ho-chul will face discipline after actively seeking a professional club job while still under contract with the national team.

The Korea Volleyball Association’s performance improvement committee on Wednesday discussed Kim’s action from last week, when he approached V-League team OK Savings Bank about their head coaching vacancy. The committee decided to ask the disciplinary committee to open its proceedings in the coming days.

It was initially reported that OK Savings Bank had offered Kim the coaching job and that Kim declined, citing his commitment to the national team.

But on Tuesday, OK Savings Bank said it was Kim who first came calling about the open position and that the team had another candidate at the top of its list.

Kim became the first full-time national team coach in February last year, under the condition that he wouldn’t move to a pro club during his tenure. Kim was signed through the 2022 Asian Games, and he was supposed to face a midterm review after the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Kim declined to attend Wednesday’s meeting and couldn’t be reached for comment. On Tuesday, the national federation said in a press release that Kim met with its president, Oh Han-nam, and vowed to stay committed to the national team.
