Last-place Jeju United gets a new head coach

The last-place club in Korea’s top professional football league named a new head coach on Friday, less than 24 hours after the previous boss stepped down.

Jeju United of the K League 1 announced Choi Yun-kyum as their new head coach. Choi, 57, is replacing Jo Sung-hwan, who resigned Thursday afternoon to take the fall for Jeju’s dismal start to this season.

They’re dead last in the 12-team competition with four draws and five losses. They remain the only winless club in the league. Choi spent his entire seven-year playing career as a defensive back with Yukong Elephants, which later became Jeju United.

After retiring in 1992, Choi was named to Yukong’s coaching staff the following year and took over as the team’s head coach in 2001.

Choi has also coached Daejeon Citizen, Gangwon FC and Busan IPark in Korea and Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC in Vietnam. Most recently, he coached Busan of the second-tier K League 2 to the promotion-relegation playoff final last year. He resigned after Busan fell to FC Seoul and failed to earn a promotion.

Jeju said Choi will be on the bench for the home game against Gyeongnam FC today.
