KBO sees two shutout games on the same day

Ryu Hyun-jin of the Los Angeles Dodgers isn’t the only Korean pitcher who can toss a complete game - just a day later, the KBO saw two shutouts on Wednesday.

Yun Sung-hwan of the Samsung Lions and Lee Seung-ho of the Kiwoom Heroes both tossed complete games to lead their teams to shutout wins on Wednesday night.

Against the NC Dinos, Yun started for the Lions at Daegu Lions Park. Throughout nine innings, Yun only gave up two hits and no runs or walks for his second win of the season.

This was the first time since Sept. 2, 2015 - also against the Dinos - that Yun has tossed a complete game and the fourth time in his career. Just 99 pitches were enough to shut the Dinos down, ending the game in only two hours, the quickest of the season.

This season, the Lions are showing strength on the mound. Before Yun, foreign pitcher Deck McGuire tossed a no-hitter during a game against the Hanwha Eagles on April 21.

Following Yun, Heroes’ starter Lee also tossed his first complete game in the KBO against the LG Twins. Throughout nine innings, Lee gave up six hits, two walks and no runs while striking out three. Lee tossed a total of 104 pitches. By tossing a complete game, Lee became the eighth pitcher in Heroes’ history to accomplish the record.

Aside from the individual statistics, Wednesday was the first time in seven years that the KBO saw two pitchers toss complete games on the same day. Prior to Yun and Lee, Noh Kyung-eun, who played for the Doosan Bears at the time, and Yoon Suk-min of the Kia Tigers tossed complete games on the same day on Sept. 26, 2012.

The Bears’ Lee Young-ha and the Dinos’ Drew Rucinski almost tossed complete games, but finished just short as they each left the mound after tossing eight innings. Lee still picked up a win while Rucinski picked up a loss.
