10 judges will be disciplined: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court said Thursday that 10 out of 66 current judges who were recently accused by prosecutors of being involved in judicial power abuse cases will be referred to its disciplinary committee.

On March 5, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office notified the Supreme Court of various instances of misconduct committed by 66 sitting judges, while announcing the results of its investigations into alleged power abuse by the judiciary during the previous administration. At that time, the prosecution indicted 10 former and incumbent judges without physical detention for interfering in court trials, disclosure of official secrets and other criminal charges.

After a two-month-long review of the 66 judges, the Supreme Court announced its decision to seek disciplinary punishment for only 10 of them. Three of the 10 belong to high courts, with the remaining seven to district courts, the top court said. According to court officials, the number of judges referred to the disciplinary committee was far smaller than expected because the statute of punishment has already expired in nearly half of the alleged misconduct cases.
