This is today's anchor briefing.

< The Sound of Silence >

< The Sound of Silence >
- Simon & Garfunkel

The familiar song “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel is ironic. How can silence have a sound? In logical terms, it goes against reason. However, no one points out that the expression is wrong.

Like the expressions “This is a silent cry” from “Flag” by poet Yu Chi-hwan (1908–1967) or “a spring of glorious sorrow” from “Until Peonies Bloom” by poet Kim Yeong-nang (1903-1950)… The poetic license used in the arts creates sympathy that conveys the subtle vibrations in one’s heart. The problem comes when this is used in reality instead of in the arts… It is often used to refute or as a way to ridicule people.

Chicken hawk, a ‘chicken pretending to be a hawk.’

In the 60s, when the Vietnam War (1955-1975) was in full swing, an expression was used popularly to criticize the hawks of the U.S. Congress who pressured people to enlist in the army without having been to the army themselves. The expression ‘chicken hawk,’ which combines ‘chicken,’ meaning a coward, and ‘hawk’, meaning the hardliners in politics, was created.

Other than this, there are lots of expressions in our daily lives that include contradictions between its meaning and concept… Some expressions like ‘welfare without increasing taxes,’ ‘clean diesel’ or ‘hot iced Americano’ are confusing the public for their contradictory meanings.

How about the National Assembly? The theory of ‘good dictatorship’ and ‘bad dictatorship’ is contradictory, and so is the ‘law for the advancement of politics’ that was created to prevent the ‘animalistic National Assembly’ by resorting to their animalistic ways… Like a Mobius strip, the contradictions have been confusing us the past week.

And now, the explosive sounds that indicate the National Assembly is turning on each other inside and outside of the building… Is that sound noisy or silent?

The Sound of Silence … In rational terms, the title goes against logic. The song’s lyrics are as follows.

People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share. No one dared. Disturb the sound of silence

-Simon & Garfunkel

And Art Garfunkel, a member of the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel said,

“This song… is about the incompetence of people who cannot communicate with each other, which makes them unable to love one another.”
- Art Garfunkel

*incompetence: 무능
