'Parasite' dominates on first day

Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” recorded number one on local box office rankings on its release date, Thursday, easily casting aside its previous top film, “Aladdin,” according to data from Korean Film Council.

The daily box office charts showed that estimated 570,000 moviegoers gathered to theaters to watch award-winning“Parasite,” whereas for Disney’s “Aladdin,” about 75,000 audiences watched the film.

Even before the film was nominated for Palme d’Or, director Bong’s works were always famous for its financial successes and high cinematic quality, his representative works such as “The Host” (2006) and “Snowpiercer” (2013).

The filmmaker will appear on tbs FM “Choi Il-gu’s Hurricane Radio” on Monday at 2 p.m. to unravel the stories behind the makings of his latest.

“Parasite” centers around two opposite families- one rich and the other poor- who cross paths unexpectedly when the poor family’s son Ki-woo lands on a tutor job to teach the rich family’s daughter.
