Nokia, KMW agree to work together overseas

Nokia signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea’s radio frequency company KMW to expand its operations overseas, the Finnish telecommunications firm announced Tuesday.

Based on the partnership, the two companies will work together to expand their influence in the global 5G market. This will give KMW an opportunity to expand its business overseas, where Nokia has secured 5G-related contracts.

Since 2016, Nokia and KMW have been jointly developing Massive MIMO technology. Seen as a crucial piece of 5G infrastructure, Massive MIMO is a technology that increases network capacity and coverage while reducing interference by raising the effectiveness of transmissions.

Kevin Ahn, head of Nokia Korea, said: “Nokia and KMW have been successfully working for the deployment of 5G infrastructure in Korea. Nokia expects this MOU to grow into a more comprehensive partnership through mutual trust.”

“I am sincerely pleased with the work done with Nokia, as it became an opportunity to promote the excellence of Korea’s technology to the world,” said President Kim Duk-yong of KMW. “Based on this MOU, we will contribute to the revitalization of the domestic 5G ecosystem and make it an opportunity to communicate with many customers around the world.”

Nokia provides telecommunications equipment to all three mobile carriers in Korea: SK Telecom, KT and LG U+.
