Moviegoers in May set a record

The number of moviegoers in May set a new record, according to a monthly report released by Korean Film Council on Friday.

The report showed that total of 8.61 million people went to the cinema to watch local films, which was a 69.1 percent increase compared to last May, or 3.53 million more. The box office shot up to 72.4 billion won ($61.15 million), a 68.8 percent increase over last year.

A few foreign films were released around that month, including “Avengers: Endgame” on April 24 and “Aladdin” on May 23. Action-packed local films such as “The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil” and “Miss & Mrs. Cops” contributed to the box office. The first sold 3.27 million tickets and the second 1.61 million. “Inseparable Bros” sold 1.43 million, and “Juror 8” sold 280,000.
